HAPPENING NOW: Pres. Donald J. Trump's former personal attorney and longtime fixer Michael Cohen testifies before Congress. https://abc7.la/2U9gOpe
So nevada is represented to say that it was like they were hiring an unregistered lobbyist so you disagree with that I don't know what they said sir but the contracts have you ever contacted anybody in the administration yes to to advocate on behalf of of any aspect of any of your contracts I ask unanimous consent Mr chairman I ask that I ask unanimous consent the gentleman time is expired you may answer the question I don't know what you're referring to sir and mister chairman the quiet mister chairman thank you mister chairman mister call and I'm pleased you agreed to testify today voluntarily in my view we are all here for just one reason and that's the American people are tired of being lied to uh they have been lied to by President trump they've been lied to by the president's children they have been lying By the president's legal representatives and it pains me to say that they have been even lied to by his congressional enablers who are still devoted to prepare to wait in protecting this giant con game on the American people now Mr cohen I'd like to talk to you about the president's assets since by law these must be rich Accurately on his federal financial disclosure and when he submits them uh for a Bank loan I'm just going you served for nearly a decade as then businessman trump's personal attendant attorney and so called fixer uh did you have did you also have an understanding of the president's assets and how he valued those items yes in November 20 17 crane's New York business reported that the trump Organization provided quote flagrantly untrue revenue figures going back to at least 20 10 to influence grains ranking of the largest private companies in New York according to the reports why the trump Organization reported nearly 94 point five billion in revenues and 20 16 public filing Suggestive grabbing news were actually less than one tenth of that to your knowledge did the President or his company ever inflate assets our revenues yes and uh was that done with the president's knowledge or direction everything was done with the knowledge and at the direction of Mr trump tells why he would do that it what purpose did it's our it depends upon the situation um there were times that I was asked again with Allen weisel berg the cfo to go back into With an individual from Forbes because Mr trump wanted each year to have his net worth rise on the Forbes wealthiest individuals list and so what you do is you look at the assets and you try to find an asset that has say for example 40 Wall Street which is about one point two million square feet find an asset that is comparable find the highest Per square foot that's achieved in the area and apply it to that building or if you going off of your rent roll can go by the gross rent roll times a multiple and you make up the multiple which is something that he had talked about this based upon what he wanted to value the assets that you know you you have provided the Committee with copies of the president's financial statements or parts of them from 20 11 20 12 and three And mister chairman I would like to submit those for the record this chairman I'd like to submit the statements to the record and I'm just sorted thank you can you explain why you had these financial statements and what you use them for so these financial statements were used by me uh for two purposes one was discussing with media whether is Forbes or other magazines um to demonstrate Mr trump's significant net worth that was one Function and the other was when we were dealing later on with insurance companies we would provide them with these copies so that they would understand that the premium which is based sometimes upon uh the individual's capabilities to pay um would be reduced and on all of this was done at the president's direction and with his knowledge yes because whatever the numbers would come back to be we would immediately reported back and Information provided to us inflate the president's assets I believe these numbers are inflated and of course inviting inflating assets when a newspaper poll to boost your ego is not a crime but to your knowledge did the President ever provided inflated assets to a Bank in order to help him obtain a long But you may answer that question these documents and others were provided to do it your Bank and one occasion where I was with them in our attempt to obtain money so that we can put a bid on the buffalo bills thank you for your answer which is a Georgia I think to the second to the gentleman from North Carolina I thank the gentleman for yielding I want to ask unanimous consent to put into the record an article from stat which indicates that Mr cohen's uh promise to access not just trump but also the circle around him it was almost If we were hiring a lobbyist close quote asking animus consent whatever without objection I ask unanimous consent that we put into the record a criminal referral for violating section 22 usc uh of the uh statue uh number 66 11 I ask unanimous consent that my letter referring uh mister cohen for violating fara uh for illegal lobbying activity be entered into the record without objection so I ask unanimous The first order of business uh for this Committee is for us to look in a bipartisan way at criminal referrals at the next business meeting This these are not documents their objections their objections that's just that's so so we're objecting to a unanimous consent request is that what Mr chairman I I'm about to hear is don't worry uh yes I will yield back alright now let me let me be clear uh mister highs I'm gonna give you a whole five minutes alright thank you mister chairman and see you alright thank you thank you mister chairman and mister mister meadows uh I the chairman made me a lot Member made me aware that I had given a little more time to this watching it felts I was gonna let you do that anyway uh but but I just want the Committee to know that because there are so many memories and I'm gonna be doing this five minutes all right thank you very much it's nice to get five minutes thank you mister chairman mister cohen you claim that you've lied but you're not a lie or just to set the record straight if he lied you are a liar by definition you also said a moment ago that the facts are inaccurate if they are facts they are accurate and that would make you inaccurate but I like to take a moment to uh I'd like to know who can solve it with to prepare for today's hearing lanny Davis and who else I can say With my counsel lanny Davis as well as Michael Monica alright uh did uh or Michael or lanny Davis or anyone else cooperate with the Democratic majority to prepare for this hearing I'm sorry say that again police did anyone did you or anyone else on your team cooperate with the Democrat party and preparing for this year we've spoken to the party okay did you prepare with chairman cummings or anyone on your team I'm sorry What do you mean by prepare prepare for this hearing prepared prepared with my counsel did you prepare with within the Democrat majority or chairman cummings we spoke with chairman cummings and the party with the chairman uh sheriff spoke with the chairmanship and his part and his people as well or whether any other individuals uh acting as a liaison uh for you with the majority already I'm so What do you say did you have a liaison other than these that you've mentioned who were working with the majority uh to prepare for this hearing because we spoke with the various individuals that you just raised yes uh Tom style or um Regarding him or any of his representatives uh anyone Associated with him or is he or any of them paying lanny Davis to represent you not that I'm aware of who is paying lanny Davis at the present moment you know one uh so he's doing all this work for nothing yes sir okay and I hope so um I kind of doubt it but uh how did lanny Davis come to represent you did he approach you or did you approach him I reached out to lanny Davis at the recommendation of my former counsel over at um Mcdermott will and emory who knew Mr Davis and this is how you reached out to Mr Davis I did yes initially okay uh so did did you want to testify before Congress or did he urge you to testify here I was asked to come here and I am here so voluntarily because it's my your ashley who my question why did he ask you to come here no sir okay because he he says that he did ask you to come here and that he convinced you and I also that he did the same with uh chairman cummings as well so you're Testimony here is that you approach lanny Davis uh to represent you and to come here he did not persuade you to come here he didn't persuade me actually chairman cummings which is part of the conversations that we engaged in with his people as well as chairman schiff and others they these we spoke in order to ask me to come here voluntarily I finally connecting of the dots here with with Mr Davis uh and you And frankly the chairman than perhaps others to be rather stunning that there is a an agenda for all this uh happening here today and uh I believe frankly that they had to bring uh the President down to impute the President and you made an oath last time you were here and that oath meant nothing to you then uh we had a note here in this very room about a month ago and it was quote to be clear that I will seek the truth nothing but the truth so help me God in quote the sounds To me the chairman made that statement in this very room last month but here we are today our first big hearing with as you and we all know what convicted liar lying to Congress is a criminal and I I believe this witness is totally in can in uh compatible with the stated goal of having to seek the truth in this hearing this is the first time in the history of Congress we have won't someone testifying your who has already been conveyed Blind to Congress and congratulations for being the first in Congress to do that and missing on earnings as well I can't believe we're coming we're brought this Committee to its knees in terms of losing its credibility and it's a shameful mockery of what our purpose is a yield back gentleman Simon takes a buyer Mr lynch thank you madam chairman let me just pick up on those last comments I want to talk about a low point how about mister pappas pled guilty Mr mann a Fort convict convicted pled guilty to two other charges Mr Gates pled guilty Mr flynn pled guilty Mr pena El Guilty Mr bandages one pled guilty Mr eliminate uh indicted for obstruction of Justice and for two years you wanna talk about an agenda my friends on the other side of the aisle refuse to bring any of these people out before the Committee so today for the first day we have one witness who voluntarily is coming forward to testify your side ran away from the truth and we're trying to bring it to the American people so Mr cohen searchable thank you for voluntarily coming before the Committee to testify I want to ask you about uh your statements regarding trump tower in Moscow and I want to drill down and some of the facts and details now you may not be aware of it but uh this goes back to way back in 19 eighty seven Mr trump uh wrote that he had ongoing discussions with uh Soviet officials back then uh to build a luxury hotel large luxury hotel across from the Kremlin and partnership with the Soviet Union so uh At that time it was the Soviet Union I wanna ask you um in your filing with the special counsel molars office uh the prosecutors wrote and I quote Mr cohen discussed the status of and progress of the Moscow project with individual one on more than the three occasions Mr cohen claims to the Committee and he briefed family members of individual one with the company about the project uh I know this is redundant but Uh who we referring to here when we refer to individual one donald J trump okay and the company the trump Organization ok I was all set through a subsidiary okay uh and who are the family members that you briefed on the trump tower Moscow project donald trump Jr and even trump ok now with these in the regular course of business are the President or family requested briefings this is the regular course of business do you recall uh there's a question on the number of briefings do you recall how many they might have been I'm sorry sir do you recall how many of these briefings that might have been like a Only 10 okay total write in your written remarks you also wrote and I quote there are at least a half dozen times between the iowa caucus in January two thousand and 16 and the end of June when Mr trump would ask me how's it going in Russia referring to the Russia Moscow towel project how did the President communicate those questions to you was a verbally all the phone verbally most of the time uh or virtually all of the time it would So he would say to me Michael come welcoming he was heading to a say a rally into a car and as I would walk him to the elevator he would ask me questions quickly regarding a series of weather being a shout about what he was referring to in terms of the project and Russia know this would be it okay uh otherwise there would be no reason to ask that of me right um you also wrote and I quote to be clear mister trump and knew of and directed the trump Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it close quote How did how did the President actually direct the negotiations if she tells that he directly after each communication that I had I would report back to him and our goal was to get this project we were interested in building what would have been the largest building in all of Europe you know so I just like to say one last ladies go ahead hard to uh the gentleman statements and sisters on topic from the lies that I To Congress in fairness benefited Mr trump it was in further answer of my protection of Mr trump which I stated in my testimony and I am not protecting Mr trump anymore and so while I truly appreciate taking some of your time on to it to attack me every single time about taxes I've no credibility it's for exactly that reason that I spent the last week searching boxes in order to find the information that I did so that you don't have to My word for it I don't want you to I want you to look at the documents that go on I want you to make your own decision I made my last sorry sir that's okay uh let me let me just say I don't think my of my colleagues on the other side aisle afraid that you're gonna lie I think they're afraid you're gonna tell the truth thank you sir I yield back the balance of my time thank you very much let's go to the gentleman from Ohio is recognized O I appreciate the gentleman for yielding I just want to respond to Mr lynch I want you to think about this one of you ever seen a federal agency where this is happening James call me director fired Andy mccabe deputy director fired lied three Under oath under investigation right as we speak Jim Baker Fbi counsel demoted then left currently under investigation by the us attorney's office in Connecticut lisa page demoted then left Peter struck deputy head of counter intelligence demoted then fired that's what happened that's what we're concerned about and today we actually ask for rod rosen stein oh by the way we now know three people have told us rod rosen stein actually was contemplating using the 20 fifth amendment to remove the guy from presidency who the American people put their and we ask for him Witness today and the chairman said no and instead we get 30 minutes from a guy who's going to prison going to prison and two months for lying to Congress Mr cohen got two quick questions for I yield back to my colleague Mister hi sask who all you talk to you said you talked to me spoke to Mr ship obviously spoke to mister cummings you've been you're going in front of both committees are here today you're gonna be in front of Mr ships Committee tomorrow have you spoken to chairman adler or anyone on his staff or have any of you are attorneys spoken to chairman adler I don't know about my attorneys I have not spoken to um you know if your attorneys have been but I have not spoken to congressman adler and I am not aware sir I'm not aware if my attorneys I can ask them can turn around and ask The answer is no okay and he said at this present time Mr Davis is not getting paid is that interested in are you anticipating in receiving some kind of compensation in the future when I start to earn a living but you got to wait three years Why is it the answer is yes a first I've never known a lawyer wait three years to get paid I guess he thinks it's important alright gotta go to the gentleman from Arizona well thank you um mister cohen you know you're a disgrace lawyer I mean you've you've been disbarred and so um I'm sure you remember when maybe you don't remember duty of loyalty duty of confidentiality attorney client privilege I think the gentleman over here right side actually understands that very very well and wouldn't do what you are doing here today so let's go back at this credibility you want us to make sure that we think of you as a real Tropic icon that you're about Justice that they're the person that somebody would call at three o'clock in the morning no they wouldn't not at all when you saw him Mr cohn or uh dissect you right in front of this Committee you contact conflict it your testimony sir you're a path alleged pathological liar you don't know truth from false hood sir I'm sorry are you referring to the President this is my time and your friend answer with a yes q a question we'll ask for an answer sure Are you familiar with rule 35 of the federal rules and criminal process procedures I am now owe the community understands that you've been in contact with the southern district of New York is that true I am in constant contact with the southern district of New York regarding ongoing investigations and part of that application is to reduce sentencing time is it not yeah there is a possibility it dancers you know it's not so yes it is okay it's not and so testimony here could actually help you out and getting your sentence less than isn't that true I'm not really sure how my appearance here today is providing some Information that the southern district can use for the creation of a case now if there is something that this group can do for me I would gladly welcome it well I I gotta tell you you know america's watching you I've been getting text right and left saying how can anybody listen to this path logical person he's got a problem he doesn't know fact from fiction and that's what's sad here is that you didn't do this for donald trump to protect donald trump You did it for you this is what no this is all about you this is all about this twitter feed and and and breaking you know let me run those another one women who love and support Michael cohen's strong pit bull sex symbol not no nonsense business oriented and ready to make a difference one thousand a month and great to make a difference against the law that's pretty sad you know uh you know over and over again you know we want to have trust it's built on the premise that we're truthful that we come forward but there's no truth with Whatsoever that's why that's important to you to look up here in and look at the old adage that our moms taught us liar liar pants on fire no one should ever listen to you and give you credibility it's sad it's sad that that we have come in fact I want to quote the chairman's very words this is a real hold on Government scientists said state uh you should go over Mr cohen several times in your testimony you state the bad things that you did for mister trump and at some point um you're apparently changed your course of action is a recurring refrain in your testimony that says and yet I continue to work for him but it's something You changed what was the breaking point at which you decided to start telling the truth There are several factors helsinki charlottesville watching the daily destruction of our civility to one another Putting up silly things like this that's so it really UN becoming of Congress it's that sort of behavior that I'm responsible for I'm responsible for your silliness because I did the same thing that you're doing now for 10 years I protected Mr trump for 10 years and the fact that you pull up a news article that has no value to it and you want to use that as the premise for discrediting me that I'm not the person that people called at three o'clock in the morning would make you in act In actuality would make you a liar which put you into the same position that I am in and I can only warn people the more people that follow Mr trump as I did blindly are going to suffer the same consequences that I'm suffering What warnings would you give young people who are tempted as you were would you encourage them not to wait 10 years to see the light what advice would you give young people in particular young lawyers so they do not abuse their bar license as you did look at what's happened to me I had a wonderful life I have a beautiful wife I have two amazing children I achieve financial success by the age of 39 I didn't go to work for Mr trump because I had to I went to work for him because I wanted to and I've lost So if I'm not a picture perfect that's the picture that should be up there if I'm not a picture perfect example of what not to do that's the example that I'm trying to set for my children you make mistakes in life and I own them and I've taken responsibility for them and I'm paying a huge price as my family so if that in and of itself isn't enough to dissuade somebody from acting in the callous manner that I did I'm not sure that that person has any um any chance very much like hunting right now Recurring theme in your testimony is concerned for your family safety what specifically are you most concerned about well the President unlike my cohen for trump that has a thousand followers he's got over 60 million people and when Mr trump turned around early in the campaign and said I can shoot somebody on fifth Avenue and get away with it I wanna be very clear he's not joking he's telling you the truth he said you don't know him I do I sat next to this man for 10 years and I watched his back I'm the Who started the campaign and I'm the one who continued in 20 15 to promote them I so many things I thought that he can do that is just great and he can and he is doing things that are great but this destruction of our civility to one another is just it's out of control and when he goes on twitter and he starts bringing in my inlaws my parents my wife what is he think is gonna happen he's causing he sending out the same message that he can do whatever he wants this is his country becoming an autocrat and hopefully something bad will happen to me and my children and my So that I will not be here and testify that's what his hope was to intimidate me and again I thank everybody who joined and said that this is just not right have you ever seen Mr trump personally threatened people with physical harm no one he would use others He would hire other people to do that I'm not so sure that he had to hire them they are already working there everybody's job at the trump Organization is to protect Mr trump Every day most of us knew we were coming in and we were going to live for him on something and that became the norm and that's exactly what's happening right now in in this country that's exactly what's happening here in governments or thank you mister chairman my time is expired strong strong Thank you come uh I'm still treatment it can can we take a break All right oh I did sir So it That's ok thank you sir Thank you and with that the Committee gonna be and going to a short recess back two hours into the hearing Michael cohen facing so many questions from Republicans about his credibility Democrats focusing on the charges he's making against the President trump having mostly to do with the campaign finance violations that he's going to prison for also for their efforts to build a trump tower in Moscow uh during the campaign when we start with Dan abrams our chief legal analyst it does appear that on the Democratic side they have a strategy to create more hearings no question they are basically creating a witness Uh as we listen to this so who else is now going to be called forward to try to verify um or challenge what Michael cohen is saying if I could trump and jared cushion or and donald trump junior it cetera so that's a clear strategy on the part of the Democrats now on the part of the Republicans it's it's a little bit um less unified in the sense that you're seeing different pieces being pulled out and there are a couple of cautions here you see a number of them they're all trying to undermine his credibility right some of them citing for example the southern district of New York which is where he pled guilty Basically saying you know this is an office where he has admitted it cetera this and this and that well I think that they have to be careful because this is an office that could also end up going after the President so if you're going to or Don junior whoever it is so I think that they have to be cautious here about about betting too much on the southern district of New York's credibility because that could come back to haunt but Chris christie one of things we are seeing right here is is a direct strategy on the Republican side they're the Focus on taking on the credibility of Michael cohen lied once lie all that well that's right and it's obvious it's exactly every defense lawyer did with the witnesses we were talking about before uh before the hearing that I put on the stand as us attorney who had lied previously I mean that's that's the standard fare I think the interesting thing is that there hasn't been one Republican yet whose journey trying to defend the President on the substance and I think that's something that should be concerning to the White House why are no Republicans standing up and defending the President on the substance and and that's either a failure of those Republicans on the Hill or You're in the White House to have a unified strategy with them they knew what was coming with Michael cohen and so I think it's gonna as the day goes on it's gonna get tired of hearing the attacks on cohen's credibility he's not a credible witness but he does have cooperation on certain things where is the defense of the President that hasn't come yet to say we haven't heard from the White House here we haven't seen a tweet yet from the President we have seen tweets from his son's yeah they're not happy about this and and like their father they're trying to distance themselves from from Michael cohen you can see Don junior there saying Michael cohen begged to work at the White House and everyone knows it um but I wanna go back to what the governor was just saying you know Republicans jump out to defend the President if some of what Michael cohen is saying in his testimony today is true the stuff about the allegations about him being a racist and saying some horribly ugly comments that those are indefensible it's gonna be really hard for them to come out and defend some things so you pick which things you want to defend and what I'm saying is what's notable to me is there's been no defense of the President not on any one particular thing there's been no different that's present especially on the most the Central charge is really coming out of this hearing right here there's no defense of the President on the idea that he directed Michael cohen to break campaign finance laws right and I think that that's that's a political For the White House is if House Republicans you could we think back to the the watergate hearings you still had people in the in the in the late days defending Richard Nixon on the substance and you don't have anybody defending him right now and that's a political problem that the White House needs to do that we can is because it's sort of a nuance defense right when you're talking about the campaign finance defense it's gonna be yeah he paid the money yeah he signed the checks yeah there was this retainer in place but it wasn't done specifically to try to impact what the election is so so what are they gonna really do who is second to get into this You just did it you just did the fence and 15 seconds is not all that new ads so it's gonna go see Mr cohn are you trying to tell me that the President told you that he was doing this to try to save himself for the election to the President ited States ever know that but then he's gonna say yes he's going to say he made it clear that he has this impact the election that's different he hasn't said that I know but that's not a road but yeah you know it's a good cross examiner you don't wanna ask you a question you don't know the answer but the bottom line is that they don't care about the answer what they care about is making the argument they should be caring about making the argument because we know Michael cohen will say the most negative things you can say that the President has done that already throughout the hearing The point is if that's the argument and that is the argument that someone needs to make it they can't say right now is they can't say that the President was telling the truth when he said he didn't pay hush money to stormy daniels and that's the case that the defendant defend the stuff you can't devote no word I think what they do is they want to minimize the crime right they want to minimize the significance of this and basically say okay look this may be true but that's what they've been amaze your crime they want to say it isn't a crime because he didn't do it because I thought that's you that's you but there was say it's not a crime and that's not the new ones you can do that that's where the strategies are very very sure outside the room right now so much anger palpable inside that hearing room Host George is just remarkable to see the two sides going back and forth at each other even before Michael cohen even started his testimony you heard chairman cummings making very clear that they are is a new sheriff you're in town and essentially he said that the days of this Committee protecting the President are over and then as you've been discussing we saw starting from the top Republican on the Committee all the way down making very clear their strategy here it is transparent that they are going after Michael cohen's credibility that they will continue to do that they are making the argument that he was after his own greed and in blind ambition cohen of course pushing back against that as Arguing that he is a man with nothing left to lose whether we will continue to see both sides digging in here and continuing to further that divide between the two of them will remain to be seen throughout the course of this day and whether any Republicans will break uh with what so far seems to be pretty strict party line here very party line so far peer Thomas uh we we know the southern district of New York not only reached a plea agreement with um with Michael cohen they also reached an immunity deal with the chief financial officer of the trump Organization we've heard from Michael cohen today uh was working with him on on setting up these hush money payments we could see that man Allen weisel berg before Congress that's right George one thing that cohen did is he put weisel berg in the room with a discussion about the payments to stormy daniels he said that there were discussions that he went and talked with weisel berg uh about the payments that he actually wanted weisel berg to come up with the money uh and uh the fact that the White suburbs didn't want to do that and then it came down to the wire and that's a critical thing about what we're hearing today as well that all this is taking place in the month right before the election and George just to take a step back uh to help viewers at home uh understand what we're talking About here after donald trump announced his presidency uh bid for the presidency in uh two thousand 15 uh the prosecutors put forth uh allegations that they say they've proven that uh am I and David packer reached out to cohen and came up with this catch and kill uh idea and the idea is that when negative stories would surface that they would attempt to kill those stories before they could be published and one Reasons why the southern district became interested in according to my sources the amount of money that was involved involved hundreds of thousands of dollars and that you had a essentially a publication uh working with a candidate to not publish stories but to actually kill them George and the question is whether business related and in and and Chris and I wanna go back to terry moran is with the southern district now does with that we have seen more testimony here uh from Michael cohen we know that they've named President is individual one perhaps there's more exposure for Don junior uh now as well Do they take further action well it's gonna be hard if if the further actions against the President has said before I don't think they're gonna do anything on that uh lesson until he's out of the presidency is I just don't believe they'll get bill bar or anybody else that Justice Department to to waive that Justice Department rule or interpretation of what's going on I think though that they're gonna keep digging there's lots of people to talk to and they're gonna keep talking to him and trying to develop whatever case they can and we know that Michael cohen is talking still to the southern district and talking about the trump Organization right and part of the question becomes does Don junior for example get charged with conspiracy uh in connection with this and then maybe the President gets named as an uninvited Co conspirator there did look there's no question That a President can be named as an uninvited Co conspirator victor next right Richard nix so that's certainly a possibility um and when you look at what cohen's testimony is and most importantly you look at the the corroboration that he has for it you look at what the southern district has said about it meaning they believe him they believe that this is what happened at the direction of the President and so you have to say to yourself well can they really do nothing uh with that That's the position that they're taking here's why they can is not only that guideline it's that it's the army we're talking about before um and they went down this road with John Edwards and lost you know the fact is that what was in his head as to why he wanted those payments to be made he will testify that he wanted to do it to protect his marriage to protect his children and not about the election and so you're gonna have a jury having to make that kind of decision and when you know or pearson earlier or one of our correspondence said we're trying to kill the King you better make sure he's dead um taking that kind of case Us attorney against either a sitting or former President ited States you better be sure you get em that was terry moran who I want to go to next I want you to address that but also to address this idea we know now with Democrats in Congress think about Michael cohen's testimony what they're trying to do with we know what Republicans in Congress think about it what we don't know yet is how this is all gonna strike in this very polarized political environment the country that's watching today well the best bet George on that as on every other issue is that it will fall along these polarized Lines in politics and in our wider culture you can hear it in the accents on both sides of the line there of the partisan line just how divided the country is geographically in addition to culturally but I do think that there's something beyond those immediate legal concerns that you guys are dis R talking about uh that might that might settle in to the National mindset and that is the portrait from an alleged insider from an insider of donald trump he called him an enigma of Michael cohen did and then went on to describe what he says are these things this Racism that that's a celia mentioned the notion that he says his son Don junior has a worst judgment of anybody's ever seen he got almost see that in their relationship uh in the way that that has played out in public his statement that only stupid people went to Vietnam his his contempt that that Michael cohen portrays this is an insiders portrait alleged portrait of of donald trump that I think might have broader political impact for donald trump down the line not just those concrete legal issues that this testimony raises but the broader sense that this is uh what's he really like Behind the sand and it is obviously unflattering you know it did seem to say that Michael cohen was most comfortable when he was dealing with his personal matters and the less the legal matter I think that this is going to be another one of these were shocked tests that we keep living through in the society that we're in right now if you thought before this morning President trump was a racist a conman and a cheat like Michael cohen just told Congress and America that he believes he is you probably still think that and if you didn't you think Michael cohen is a liar no matter what he says uh Michael If he is to be believed opened up pulled the curtain back on on the mystery that is donald trump a side of him that we rarely get to see life inside trump tower who gets to stand behind his back and whispering in his ears uh you know words about about meetings potentially um we're seeing we're hearing from someone whose testimony you could be so potentially invaluable because of the role he played for so many years in the company and Chris christie Union you've known Michael for what I've known Michael for a long time as well as We're seeing a humble Michael cohen before this Committee today allowed the anecdotes a lot of the personal anecdotes have the ring of truth is that this is an UN caffeinated Michael uh Michael cohen today and and I would say that in response to what terry said you know I could tell you from personal experience that there are many of us who are running in two thousand 16 who thought because he mentioned the John Mccain incident and in him not being a hero and I will tell you that a lot of us thought at the time that this was over the trump was gonna have to drop out after that that no one can sustain that and I think that's the problem with Fox I don't think it's the normal politics gavel is Again let's hear the questioning Thank you mister chairman mister coin you have admitted to lying on your taxes according to federal prosecutors in the southern district of New York you also lied to banks to get loans but prosecutors wrote quote to secure loans going falsely understand the amount of debt he was caring and omitted information for his personal financial statements to induce a Bank to land based on incomplete information and quote is that correct that's correct you lied on financial documents so you lied to Natural institutions in order to secure lungs so we've established that you lie on your taxes you like the banks and you have been convicted of lying to Congress it seems to me that there's not much that you won't lie about when you stand to gain from it in fact the prosecutors from the southern district of New York noted that each of your crimes quote bear commonsense a characteristics which each involving deception and being motivated by your personal greed and ambition as your appearance here today motivated Your desire to remain in the spotlight for your personal benefit no member you have sought out ways to rehabilitate your image from taxi vader banks will or an all around liar to an honorable truthful man by appearing before cable news I'm concerned you could be using your story and this congressional platform for your personal benefit such as a desire to make money from book deals so can you It under oath that you have not and will not pursue a book or movie deal based on your experiences working for the President No one you cannot commit to making money off of a book or movie deal based on your work you know what I just but there's two parts to your question the first part of your question you asked me whether or not I had spoken to people regarding a possible book deal and I have and I've spoken to people who sought me out regarding a movie deal no I didn't ask you that was the first part of what I said can you commit under oath that you will not that you have not and will not pursue a book deal and I would not No okay can you commit under oath that you will not pursue opportunities to provide commentary for a major news network based on your experiences working for the President no one can you commit under oath that you will not pursue political office in the state of New York know so you don't commit to uh changing your ways basically because you want to continue to use your background as a liar a cheater uh convicted liar to make money that's what you want And that's gonna get me a book deal and movie deal and television and I had a spot on television I don't think so well it appears that it will it heal my remainder of my time to chairman to mistake that I think the gentlelady for yielding and Mr cohen and your sentencing statement to the court and just in December of last year you said I want to apologize to the people of the United States you deserve to know the truth approximately a month later buzz feed news ran a story that was the story in the country for a couple of days Busby story rain January seventeenth 20 19 on January eighteenth your Council went on Tv and wouldn't confirm or deny the story the next day the special counsel's office did something that's never happened never happened they said the description of the specific statements to the special counsel's office and the characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office regarding Michael cohen's congressional testimony are not accurate why didn't your lawyer the day that he's on Tv when this story is the biggest thing in the news in the country why didn't he deny the buzz feed story Because I didn't think it was his responsibility to do that we are not the fact checkers for buzz feed and on Tv to talk about the very story you committed to the court when you were trying to get your sentence reduced that you that the American people deserve to know the truth you had the golden opportunity to give them the truth on a false story the buzz feed story and your lawyer didn't say a thing he is actually he said this I can't confirm I can't deny you had an opportunity to do exactly what you told the judge you were gonna do one month after you said it and you didn't do it why Not again it wasn't our responsibility to be the fact checker for the news agencies there are just so the cuts look like something the President says so far approximately 90000 fitness I got you I got a second I'll let you finish it chairman man who special counsel him and can these finish something they've never done they said that story was false now u can respond King my response the President has told something over nine thousand lies to date due in Mr Davis or Mr Monica where do I go on television in order to correct his mistakes when mystery answer those are answers no the big subject you can't do it no and I I would like to climb is it listen up the gentleman's time has expired you may finish answering the question and then we're going to go to Mr conway well I wanted to say is I just find it interesting sir that between yourself and your colleagues that not one question so far since I'm here has been asked about President trump that's actually why I thought I was coming today not to not to confess the mistakes that I've made I've already done that and I'll do it again every time you ask me about taxes or mistakes yes I made my mistakes are saying now we again and I'm gonna pay the ultimate price but I'm not here today and the American people don't care about my taxes they want to know what it is that I know about Mr trump and not one question so far has been asked about Mr trump Mr connelly thank Chairman Well Mr cohen sir based on your testimony and your 10 year experience um I think you can recognize the behavior you're being subjected to and the other side of the aisle discredit slander uh use any trick in the book to prevent your testimony from sticking the idea that the witness would come to us who's flawed and you certainly are flawed Means they can never tell the truth and there is no validity whatsoever to our single word they say wouldn't discredit every single krug criminal trial of organized crime in the history of the United States because all of them depend on someone who's turned it would make Rico no and void we couldn't use anymore this Congress historically has relied on all kinds of shady figures who turned Most famous who led to the decapitation of organized crime families in America your velocity congressional hearing he was a witness and he committed a lot worse crimes than you're convicted out Mr cohen so don't be fooled by what my friends on the other side of the aisle a trying to do today it is do everything but focus on the principle known as individual number one in the southern district of New York as I recall is that correct Ms That is correct now Mr cohen I want to ask you about something that's not in your testimony that so far it has not been made public in our Committee staff search of documents provided by the White House that were otherwise it redacted or already in the public and I guess the White House thought that was funny they made one mistake the White House there was an email from a special assistant to the President to a deputy White House counsel and the email is dated may sixteenth 20 17 and it says and I quote potus meaning the President requested a meeting on Thursday with Michael cohen Jay sec love any idea what this might be about and quote do you recall being asked to come to the White House on around that time With mister secular May of 20 17 off the top of my head sir I don't um I recall being in the White House with jay sec low it was in regard to the um the documents the document production as well as my appearance before the House select Intel um but I'm not sure if that specifically well that front but what I will do is I will check uh all my records and I'm more than happy to provide you with any documentation or um the response to this question well that that's you saw Touch on the sonoma Valley the purpose of the discussion at least among others this occurred this meeting occurred just before your testimony before the select Committee and intelligence here in the House is that correct I believe so yes was that a topic of conversation with the President himself if this is the specific instance that I was there with Mr saca lo yes see you had a conversation with the President the United States about Europe pending testimony before the House intelligence Committee is that correct that's correct what was the nature Conversation He want to be to cooperate he also want to just ensure by making the statement and I said it in my testimony there is no Russia there is no collusion um there is no um there is no deal he goes it's all a witch hunt and it's he has this stuff has to end did you take those comments to be suggestive of what might flavor your testimony He's been saying that to me for many many months and at the end of the day I knew exactly what he wanted me to say and why was Mr second low in the meaning Because he was going to be representing Mr trump um going forward as one of his personal attorneys in this matter so it's sort of a hands off me correct um in any way final question to the President in any way from your point of view coach you in terms of how to respond to questions or the content of your testimony before House Committee again it's difficult to answer because he doesn't tell you what he wants what he does is again Michael There's no Russia there's no collusion there's no involvement there's no interference I know what he means because I've been around him for so long so if you're asking me whether or not that's the message that's staying on point that's the party line that he created that so many others are now touting yes that's the message that he wanted to reinforce them and Simon is expected with the massey Mr cohen can you just clarify did you say that at times you would do what you thought Mr trump wanted you to do not specifically what he's told you to do at times yes So you just went on your intuition I don't know if I would call it intuition as much as I would just say my knowledge of what he wanted because it happened before and I knew what he had wanted there's a there's a lawyer have a duty to provide his client with good legal advice yes were you a good lawyer to Mr trump I believe so when you uh arrange the payment to miss clifford you say in your testimony I will quote from your testimony that you did so quote without bothering to consider whether that was improper much less whether it was the right thing to do you said Quote that's your testimony today you said you didn't even consider whether it's legal how could you give your client legal advice when you're not even considering whether it's legal I did what I knew Mr trump wanted this conversation with Mr trump I didn't started I didn't ask for your good fixer I asked whether you are good lawyer you know sometimes you have to know both together I needed to at that time insure and protect Mr trump so if I put my which I'm clearly clearly suffering the penalty of I clearly I mean you know understand the side of wrong so you feel like buying without To consider whether it was proper much less whether it was the right thing to do by ignoring any conscience if you have one that you are protecting Mr trump I'm sorry sir I don't know if you feel that was how to protect as his lawyer you feel that you did a good job you said you're a good lawyer right that's not being a good lawyer to not even consider whether it's legal or not For I didn't work for the campaign I was working and I was trying to protect his campaign I sat with Mr trump and this goes back all the way to 20 11 this isn't the first scenario with mist and let's go back there so what my point my point is this is this was an ongoing situation and it didn't just start in right let's our police we have to let me finish well it started in a it didn't start out let me start as they many years earlier when were you disbarred yesterday from what I In the paper yesterday when should you have been disbarred based on the legal counsel you were giving your client I don't have an answer for your question how long were you uh Council for Mr trump since two thousand and seven when is the first time you gave him bad legal advice your failed to inform him of his legal obligations as you as you testified today you did in the case of the payment to miss clifford was the first time you did that would that qualify for Department I don't know so I'm not the bar Association I think you uh should consult with them maybe occasionally on some of these things is that there's no point now I lost my license is anybody uh as anybody else promised to pay Mr Davis for representing you know nobody has no are you offering question quickly um July you said in this is also in your testimony in the days before the Democratic convention you became privy to a conversation that some of Hillary clinton's emails would be leaked is that correct correct okay Was that in you said late July do you know the exact day uh I believe it was either the eighteenth and the nineteenth and I would say is that it would be on the nineteenth but was definitely July I believe so yes you know that was public knowledge in June this was Mr sanchez and I'd like to submit this unanimous consent to submit this for the record without objection so Mr signs reported to the media on June twelfth that those emails would be late so I'm not saying you have fake news I'm saying you have old news and um Really not much to that I would like to yield the remainder of my time to Mr higgins thank you serve Mr cohen you know quoting your closer can earlier said I spent last week looking through boxes to find documents that would support your accusations where those boxes good sir but they were all the boxes are in your garage or they're in the storage and there are these not boxes that should have been turned over to investigative authorities during the many criminal investigations even subject to so these are the boxes that were returned to me it would be a great day include that apart into crimes that you've committed should they not have been turned over to Rome and its investigative authority admits a lanny Davis These boxes now gentlemen you may answer the question I don't understand his questions are well And watching This coming morning thank you chairman cummings for convening this hearing and thank you mister cohen for voluntarily testifying this morning Mr cohen you are the executive vice President and special counsel for the trump Organization correct I was the executive vice President special Council to donald J trump and special counsel means you are the attorney for him is that right just because I was there in order to handle matters that he felt were significant and important to him individually and those included legal matters yes sir sir as a form You're familiar with legal documents known as non disclosure agreements or n da is that right yes sir I'm sure you know the 10 da is properly written scope can be reasonable in certain business contacts but they can also be abused to create a chilling effect to silence people as we've seen in the me too movement and and other places isn't that right mister cohen yes and Mr cohen the trump Organization used n da days extensively isn't that right that's correct Mr I'm reading from a recent Washington post article regarding the language in one of these types of India is where the terms were described as very broad for instance the terms confidential information was defined to be anything that quote Mr trump insists remain private or confidential including but not limited to any information with respect to the personal life political Affairs and or business Affairs of mister trump or any family member Quote to those terms sound familiar to you I've seen that document in fact there's a class action lawsuit filed this month by former trump campaign worker jessica den sion that this entity a language is illegal because it is too broad too vague and would be used to retaliate against employees who complain of illegality or wrongdoing would you agree that in the use of the n d's of these types of With this type of language and later when donald trump sought to enforce them that he intended to prevent people from coming forward with claims of wrongdoing yes would you agree that the effect of the use of these Indians and their enforcement was to have a chilling effect on people or silence them from coming forward I apologize and I if you wanted to find chilling I'm not sure I would just stop that he would and using these india's or trying to enforce them would basically try to keep people silent that was the goal And nothing at the trump Organization was ever done unless it was run through President donald trump correct that's a hundred percent certain ok Mr cohn do you believe that there are people out there today either from the president's business or personal life who are not coming forward to tell their stories of wrongdoing because of the president's use of n da is against them I'm sorry sorry I don't know the answer to the question okay sir I have a couple of other questions for you when was the last communication with President trump or someone acting on his behalf so I don't have the specific date but it was awhile ago ok do you do you have a general time frame I would suspect it was um within two months post the raid of my um my home okay so early fall of last year generally generally and what did he or his uh agent communicate to you Unfortunately this topic is actually something that's being investigated right now by the southern district of New York and I've been asked by them not to discuss and not to talk about these issues fair enough is there any other wrongdoing or illegal act that you are aware of regarding donald trump that we haven't yet discussed today yes and again those are part of the investigation that's currently being looked at by the southern district of New York sir uh congressman cooper asked you about um whether you are you are aware of any physical violence committed by President trump I just have a couple of quick questions do you have any knowledge President trump abusing any control substances I'm not aware of that no do you have any knowledge of President trump being delinquent tiny alimony or child care payments I'm unaware of any of them do you have any knowledge of President trump arranging any healthcare procedures for any woman not in his family I'm not aware of that no thank you I yield back thank you mister cloud Thank you chairman Mr cohen can you tell me the significance of may six After may fifth in terms of sir couple months from now that's the day they need to surrender so federal prison uh could you for the record state uh what you've been convicted of I've been convicted on five counts of tax evasion there's one count of misrepresentation of documents to a Bank there's two counts one dealing um with campaign finance for karen mcdougal one count of Campaign finance violation for stormy daniels as well as lying to Congress thank you can you state what your official title with the campaign was I did not have a camping title and your position in the trump administration I did not have one okay and today's testimony you said that you were not looking to work in the White House uh the southern district of New York in their statement they are sentencing memo says this cohen's criminal violations in the federal election laws are also stir like others crimes by his own ambition and greed cohen privately told Friends colleagues and including sees text messages that expected to be given a prominent role in the new administration when that did not materialize cohen found a way to monetize his relationship and access with the President so uh were they lying or are you lying today I'm not saying it's a lie I'm just saying it's not accurate this I did not want to go to the White House I retained a tan I boarded an attorney and and I sat with Mr trump with him For well over an hour explaining the importance of having a personal attorney that every President has had one in order to handle matters like the matters I was dealing with which included selling some some reserves in my time for me daniels as dealing with stuff and ask less in his consent other personal matter insistent that need no excuse me this is my time and ask unanimous consent to submit the sentencing memo from the southern district of New York New York for the record without objection to order It's it's fun alright look at that in a second Okay this memo States that you committed four distinct federal crimes over a period of several years you are motivated to do so by personal greed and repeatedly used your power to influence for deceptive ins it goes on to say that uh you were that they each involved they were distinct in their harms with their common set of characteristics that they involve deception and where each motivated by personal greed and ambition um there's a lot we don't know in regards to this investigation but here's what we do now we know that you are expecting a job at the White House and didn't get it you made millions lying about your close access to the President you have a hit Of lying for personal gain including that's banks you're about your accountant to law enforcement and your family the Congress the American people the southern district we know New York you said that you did all this at a blind loyalty to Mr trump but your sentencing memo set States this this was not an act out of blind loyalty is cohen suggest cohen was driven by a desire to further ingratiating himself with potential future President for homes political set success coming himself claimed credit for now we're in a For truth and I don't know chairman how we're supposed to ascertain the truth in this quagmire of the hearing when the best witnesses we can bring before this is already been convicted of lying before us and what's sad is the American people have seen this play out before we have people in prominent positions fail and then couple of years later they get a book deal now you're set to go to jail for a couple of years they come out with the multimillion book deal that's that's not bad living and uh So my question is is will you uh today's Will you today to commit to donate any further proceeds to book deals to film reviews to charity no thank you I will the gentleman yield no I don't think you know if you met your man I think my finish with the gentleman you yield to mister meadows uh few minutes just go no says manson may finished Mr cohen he's yielded me and so I didn't leave my response listen now every mission it made Mr chairman mary finished my response of the responsible answer is question please mister mister cohen everything has been made of your lies in the past I'm concerned about your Today under under your testimony just a few minutes ago to me you indicated that you had contracts with foreign entities and and yet we have a truth and testimony disclosure form which requires you to list those foreign contracts for the last two years and you put in a on there and it's a criminal offense to not have that accurately so when were you lying either in the testimony to me earlier today or when you fill out the form gentlemen time has Fired just a coin you may answer his question and then whatever you wanted to say on it as it's questions fortunately I don't have an answer for his question but as well I'm not no no mister chairman as if relates to the gentlemen is not a word I I he said he does not have an answer I mean mister chairman when we were in the majority with all due respect mister chairman hold on regular order the gentleman has just said he doesn't have an answer and you had a government run over your time oh he's Under oath to tell the truth one of them is not accurate Mr chairman you will you have time to answer questions and just a question to chairman just a question Mr ration it's mister asking Mr cohen thank you for your composure today our colleagues or not upset because you lied to Congress for the President there are upset because you stopped lying to Congress or the President now you've described the trump campaign as a once in a lifetime money making opportunity the greatest infomercial of all time I think you said and this may be the most trenching observations of your whole testimony do you think the trump campaign were presidency ever stopped being about making money for the President his family and his Organization yeah When did it stop being that when he won the election and it would it become about at that point then it had to be about figuring out what to do here in Washington can you carefully explain to America how the hush money payments to karen mcdougal and stormy daniels worked can you carefully explain what catch and kill is short I received a phone call regarding both caramel As well as stormy daniels obviously different times stating that there were issues that were going to be damaging to Mr trump and the with the stormy daniels it started in 20 11 when she wanted to have something removed from the website and that was the first time I met keith David I spoke with keith davidson her then acting attorney and we were successful in having it taken down from the Web site wasn't until years later did right by around the time of the campaign to they come back and they ask what What are you going to do now because she's back on the trail trying to sell the story and which point in time David packer on behalf of the National choir reached out to her and her attorney in order to go take a look at um lie detector test that would prove that she was telling the truth they then contact me and told me that she was telling the truth that which point uh again all the times he took a lie detector test allegedly took a lie detector test and was seen by an employee of the National enquirer at which point Time I went straight to Mr trump's office and explain why this time it's different than another time okay when you say different another time were there other women paid sexual hush money by donald trump or his Organization was this is standard operating practice you know so you're not aware of any other cases where it's taking place I'm not aware of any other case that Mr trump paid so which brings us to the karen mcdougal he was supposed to pay he was supposed to pay a hundred and 25000 dollars for the life story of karen mcdougal Whatever the reason may be he elected not to pay it David pecker was very angry because there was also other moneys that David had expended on his behalf unfortunately David never got paid back for that either for David pecker had done this in other cases of other mistresses are women other sorts of circumstances yes okay not all of them had to do with women are are you aware of anything that the President uh has done at home or abroad that may have subject Him to warm a subject him to extortion or blackmail I'm not no okay um are you aware of any videotapes that may be the subject of extortion or blackmail I've heard about these tapes for a long time I've had many people contact me over the years uh I have no reason to believe that that tape exists in December two thousand 15 donald trump was asked about his relationship with felix aider a convicted felon and real estate developer he replied felix seder boy have to even think about it I'm not that familiar with them um Why did trump endeavored to hide his relationship with felix aider and what was his relationship well he certainly had a relationship felix was a partner in a company called Bay rock that was involved in the deal of the trump soho hotel as well as I believe the trump Fort lauderdale project why did he want to distance himself that's what mister trump does he distance himself when things go bad for someone and at that point in time that was going bad for Mr sitter you said Lie to Congress about trump's negotiations to build uh his Moscow tower because he made it clear to you that he wanted you to lie one of the reasons you know this is because quote Mr trump's personal lawyers reviewed an edited my statement to Congress about the timing of the Moscow that our negotiations before I gave it so this is a pretty breathtaking claim uh and I just want to get to the facts here um which specific lawyers reviewed and ended your statement to Congress on the Moscow tower negotiations into they make any changes to your statement there were changes Made some additions uh jay sokolow for one were there changes about the timing the question of the government's time has expired you may answer that there were several changes that we've made including um how we were going to handle that message Mr was we've been yes the message of course being uh the length of time that the trump tower Moscow project stayed and remained um a life that was one of the changes yes Yeah first of all I like to clear up something I just thought something it bothers me uh you started off your testimony and you said I think in response to some question that President trump never expected to win I just want to clarify the clarify that I dealt with some President trump several times as he was trying to get wisconsin he was always confident he was working very hard and this idea that somehow he was just running to uh raise his profile for some future adventure at least in my experience it is preposterous and I don't always I find it offensive when anti trump people imply that you just design a larkin didn't expect But be that as it me um my first question concerns uh your relationship with the court um do you expect um I mean right now I think you're you're sentenced to three years correct that's correct do you expect any time uh using this testimony other testimony after you get done doing whatever you're gonna do this week do you ever expect to go back and ask for any sort of reduction sense yes there are ongoing investigations currently being conducted that have nothing to do This Committee or Congress that I am assisting in and it is for the benefit of a rule 35 motion yes so you expect and perhaps what you've testified here today will affect going back and reducing this what we think is relatively light three or since you you expect to go back and ask for a further reduction based off of my appearance here today well based upon whatever you do Between now and the request for the rule 35 motion is in the complete hands of the southern district of New York and the way the rule 35 motion works is what you're supposed to do is provide them with information that leads to ongoing investigations I am currently working with them right now on several other issues of investigation that concerns them that they're looking at if those investigations become fruitful then there is a possibility for rule 35 motion and I don't know what the benefit in terms of time would be but this Hearing today is not going to be the basis of the rule 35 motion I wish it was but it's not I'd like to yield some time to uh congressman Jordan You'll to the gentleman from North Carolina and Mr cohen I'm gonna come back to the question I asked before with regards to your false statement that you submitted to Congress on here it was very clear that it asked for contracts with foreign entities over the last two years have you had any foreign contract with foreign entities whether it's novartis or the Korean air line or context and be the Bank your testimony earlier said that you had contracts with them In fact you went into these are all believe it talks about lobbying I did no lobbying on top and your testimony and I'm not asking about lobbying Mr cohen are not government agencies private private lauren hope that rated companies do you have foreign contracts I currently have no form did you have foreign contracts over the last two years foreign contracts contracts with foreign entities did you have your own trick yes yes why did you put them on the form it says it's a criminal offense to not put them on this form for the last two years why did you not do that because those foreign companies that two are not government companies it says non governmental Mr cohen you signed it own it means being on government yeah and right it says foreign agency it is says foreign contracts do you want us to read it to you I I read it and it was reviewed by my counsel and I am a non government employee it was not lobbying and they are not it has nothing to do with lobbying it says it's a criminal offense to not list all your foreign contracts that's what it says Well then I'm gonna take a look at it before I leave how you've heard I will and hopefully I will amend it prior to leaving because that's not the way I read your document you know it's just one more example Mr cohen of your skirting the truth okay I wanna ask one other question one other question mister going it's my time not yours where you advise or what is your counsel advice to withhold your written testimony to the latest possible date as John dean said last night on cnn was it my wife Were you advised or was your counsel advise to withhold your written testimony to this Committee at the latest possible date to get it to this Committee at the latest possible day as John dean said that he advised you we sir no no we will never advised we John dean I've never spoken with giant it has he spoken to your attorney I I don't know I've never spent last year tony's right he working last night toto 11 12 o'clock you know me you've been coming for some time I I made into the If you We will working till 11 12 o'clock last night to finish every so you are writing it last night Mr cohen would be the immediate or we were making edits all the way through the night that I'm sorry thank you mister chairman mister cohen in November two thousand and 13 President donald trump testified under oath in a lawsuit related to the failed real estate project trump international hotel and tower in Fort lauderdale during the Position President trump was asked about his knowledge of felix se tir a Russian born real estate developer and convicted member of the Russian mafia who according to press reports pled guilty for his role in a 40 million stock manipulation scheme and it's worth noting as well publicized the direct relationship between the Russian mafia in the Kremlin over the years President trump was asked how many times he interacted with convicted Russian mobster felix stater in 20 13 President trump testified that quote not many if you were sitting in the room right now I really wouldn't know what he looked like unquote Mr cohen as you previously testified isn't it true that President trump knew convicted Russian mobster felix seder in two thousand and 13 when he made that statement yes isn't it true that because of Mr sanders relationship to the trump Organization that he had an office in the trump tower and on the 20 Laura used to train the 26 for as important why because it's mister trump's floor so he had an office on the same floor as President trump in fact his office when he left became my office it isn't it also true that convicted Russian mobster sate or even had business cards indicating that he was a senior adviser to donald trump as reported by the Washington post yes Did convicted Russian mobsters cedar pay rent for his office no he did not so based on those facts isn't it true that President trump misled at best or worse lied under oath Yes especially in December two thousand and 15 President trump was asked again about his relationship to convicted Russian mobster Mr sadder by reporter for the Associated press he stated quote felix seder boy I have to even think about it unquote he added quote I'm not that familiar with him unquote Mr clone where would we find business records that explain the president's relationship to the convicted Russian mobster felix seder with those be in the trump organization's files they've been the trump where Nation's files that would be C c's to Iraq which was the name of mister sabres company um I suspect on the sabres email address possibly hard files in possession um of Mr slater and when you say in possession of the trump Organization where It depends upon who the attorney was that was working on it now it would probably be uh in a box um off site they have storage facility that they could uh old files in addict in addition to convicted Russian mobster saved or do you know of any other ties to convicted or alleged mobsters President trump may have I'm not aware is it true that many people with ties to Russia ultimately bought condos in trump properties usually for cash and if so how many are we talking 10 20 I'm not honestly sir I'm not aware of any um you know the statement that was you're referring to I believe is made by the Eric are done and I don't agree with it so are you aware of any cash purchases by Russian ugh arcs and family members of trump properties I'm not aware of that I can tell you when you say cash I mean walking in with a satchel of rubles of the answer is I've never seen that happen I've never heard of it I will tell you when we sold Mr trump's property in palm Beach the home for 95 million dollars he came in by wire and that came from mister revolt of yobs Bank account one of the question you also talked about President trump doing negotiations throughout the campaign regarding the trump tower and Moscow uh was he directly involved in those negotiations and if so how do you know well the answer is yes it is it relates to negotiations it was merely follow ups To what's currently happening what what's happening with Russia meaning he wanted me to give them a status report the problem with this is that the project never advanced because they were unable Mr stated was unable to provide me with proof that somebody owned or controlled the piece of property that we can actually build on gentlemen time is expired into the marsh is a cohen uh why did Mr trump choose to hire you and why did he trust you with the various tasks that you performed for him I don't know what you would have to Question well uh we've heard here that you have bad character you've admitted to that over the years you have no idea why he chose to hire you in two thousand and six I was asked by Don junior to come meet with his father I did he then followed up by asking if I would take a look at an issue that was occurring at trump world tower with the board I went ahead and I looked into it and I found that the um statements that were the board would making about Mr trump were inaccurate and the reason Don came Me is because I had an apartment there for investment my parents had an apartment there my inlaws live there friends of mine we all board is a big block from a from a brokerage company we got a good price on each unit and we ultimately turned over the board and I became actually the treasurer of the board because the out of control spending was going to put the building into bankruptcy I was proud to say that within a year we had plus a million dollars versus minus 13 the end of the Mr trump appreciated that and he tasked me with something else was to handle problem that Don junior had um created in terms of a business um um when I licensed to help and we resolved that and then on top of that is the third time Mr trump had asked me to take a look at the third trump entertainment resort um chapter 11 reorganization because he had a series of Questions that he wanted answered and I read these to stack books um gave them the answers that he needed and with that he the next time I was sitting in his office and he asked me if I was happy at the sleepy old firm that I was with I said yes he said would you rather work for me you offer me a job and he said yeah and we negotiated I actually never went back to my office right wait uh you suggested that the President sometimes can be a Wishes indirectly uh for example you said quote Mr trump did not directly tell me to lie to Congress that's not how he operates and quote can you explain how he does this sure it would be no different if I said that's the nicest looking tie I've ever seen isn't it what do you gonna fight with him the answer is no she said yes the nicest looking tired ever seen that's how he speaks he doesn't give you questions he doesn't give you orders he speaks in a code and I understand the code because I've been around him for a decade It's your impression that others who work for him understand the code as well most people yes mister or not I don't know whether we should believe you today but I'm gonna ask you uh this one last question what is the truth that you know President trump fears most That's a tough question sir I don't have and I don't have an answer for that one what does he fear most what's the truth that he fears most from your perspective and again I don't know whether we should believe you here today but you know it's a tough question so I don't know how to answer that question that let me ask you this what principles have you chosen to follow in your life and you wish to follow different principles now I've always tried to be a good person I've tried to be a great friend there are many I think over 40 statements written Support uh to the sentencing judge I've friends why treat incredibly well that I know for over 40 years and I treat people after 40 minutes the same exact way um did I might perfect no I make mistakes yes I made mistakes absolutely I'm gonna pay the consequences for it but I all I would like to do is be able to get my life back to protect my wife and my children supporting grow old that's pretty much where I'd like to be and you feel yourself A different set of principles now and then you follow it throughout your life and I do and I'm trying I'm trying very hard I thank you for your questions and some of the other ones are really make it difficult to try to you know show some redemption um but you know I am I am trying I am trying thank you thank you go michelle thank you mister chairman I wanna mention really quick clarification on the truth in testimony form uh the the mention was around whether it talks about uh foreign entities that all and the question is in fact whether witnesses have any contracts or payments originating with a foreign government it does not cover For an entities just foreign government entities so Mr cohen what I'd like you to ask you to do is review this issue over lunch uh with your attorneys and if you need to amend your form we ask that you do that before the conclusion of today's hearing uh also I represent a purple district I did not come here for partisan bickering in fact I actively wanted to avoid it so when I ask these questions today it is not as someone who has a vendetta against the President it says someone who comes from generations of service members who swore an oath to obey the orders of the President of the United States and who along with myself and every single other Person up here support uphold and defend the constitution of the United States my forefathers served their country they serve their commander in chief and they serve the idea that America is free and just in that the law of the land rules as all especially those in the highest levels of our government so I asked these questions to help determine whether our very own President committed felony crimes while serving in the oval office including efforts to conceal payments that were intended to mislead the public and influence the outcome of an election I hope to God that is not the case so Mr cohen January 20 second 20 eighteen just days after the Wall Street Journal broke the story that Mr cohen paid a hundred and 30000 dollars to stephanie clifford to silence her during the 20 16 presidential campaign a nonprofit watch dog common cause to file a complaint with the common cause filed a complaint with the Department of Justice and fcc alleging the payment to miss clifford may have represented an illegal in kind contribution to the trump campaign I ask that their complaint be entered into the record on February thirteenth 20 eighteen Mr cohen you sent a statement to the reporters that said quote I used my own Funds to facilitate the payment of a hundred and 30000 dollars to miss stephanie clifford and neither the trump Organization nor the trump campaign was party to the transaction with miss clifford and neither reimbursed me for the payment either directly or indirectly was the statement faults statement is not false I purposely left out in this trump individually from that statement okay why did you say it that way because that's what was discussed to do between myself Mr trump and Allen weisel berg so it was carefully worded yes man great Mr Reporter for the magazine vanity fair has reported that she interviewed the very next day on February fourteenth 20 eighteen about the payment and reimbursement and she wrote quote last February fourteenth I interviewed cohen in his office about the statement he gave the fcc in which she said trump didn't know about the stormy payment or reimbursement for it do you recall this meeting with the reporter I do the reporter also wrote trump called while I was there I couldn't hear much but he wanted to go over what the public messaging would be is that accurate it is did the President call you what you Having a meeting with the reporter yes did the President call you to coordinate on public messaging about the payment to miss clifford in or around February 20 eighteen yes what did the President ask or suggest that you say about the payments or reimbursements he was not knowledgeable of these reimbursements and he wasn't knowledgeable of my actions yes you did say that yes move great uh in addition to the personal check for 35000 dollars in July 20 17 is there additional Rating evidence that mister trump will a sitting President of the United States directly reimburse you hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws there are 11 checks that I received for the year um the reason why 11 on because as I stated before when I had two checks and you have copies of all of those I can get copies I have to go to the Bank so we will be able to get copies of all 11 checks that Mr trump from provided To you as part of this criminal scheme that's either from his personal account is what was demonstrated in the exhibit or it would come from the from donald trump the count the um trust account thank you mister cohen I yield back the remainder of my time Gifts Thank you mister chairman uh you know I'm just sitting here I'm new to the Committee I'm not attorney sometimes I've seen it on your answers to your comment earlier I think there could be a better attorney I don't know um I'm looking through this uh you come in here and you rail on the present United States commander in chief weighs over and across the Pacific ocean trying to negotiate a deal to make this world safer and mister chairman that's just having this Committee at this time when they had to use out of the It's just it's just uh I think the new President but you could call him a racist a cheat um and you know acting is character and I've been with the President a little bit and uh I don't I didn't see that in the present I see a President who is very sincere in trying to make this country better for every American and and if you come in here and doing some say this is a great parent and thence on your part it's really unbelievable real repentance would be go serve your time and and and and uh don't don't come back here and make allegations towards amanda came to uh assist and straight I look in here from the uh remarks and the prosecutor of the southern district New York uh false statements to a Bank three which cohen pleaded guilty was far from as isolated event is one of the long series of self serving lies cohen told the numerous financial institutions earlier testimony I think I heard you say the only there's a home equity loan but apparently the prosecutors in New York city that there is other financial things that you did you also they said managed to commit a series of crimes all with holding himself out as a licensed attorney and upstanding member of the bar um Also the southern district uh prosecutor said that uh wrote that your consciousness of wrongdoing is fleeting that your morse is minimal and then your instinct is to blame others is strong uh so I'm kinda left here why you work for the President for 10 years before he was President if you have any sense of integrity that you're trying to tell us you have now it was that bad why didn't you leave you won't you won't stop there cuz you financial reasons you had ways to leave your attorney um and so that's just kinda you know presidents working tirelessly and you couldn't make these allegations and you could've left anytime you one looks like to me you're trying to save face and with the other questions that came out here was looks like to me you're gonna A very uh lucrative deal at some point in your life but you don't look like you're any closer to retirement you have some type of lou hoover deal and so one of my questions is has come up a little bit uh talks with you and your attorney and there's been talks about members of Congress and staff and and and he said there was some discussions was any of those discussions that you are your attorneys had with members of Congress or staff or prosecutors uh to considerations to favor or other considerations to your family in the future no The conversations were about the topics and uh cuz there were things that originally we could not speak about at the request of whether was the special counsel's office for the southern district or any of the other agencies including um the House select Intel on the Senate select until um search just for your personal education here I was asked to come here um your chairman sent a letter to Mr Davis And I accept it so I'm here voluntarily so I understand why and if you believe that Mike I understand I think it's a political theater if you believe it's not political theater of me and I take no pleasure in saying anything negative about Mr trump you've met him for a short period of time I've been with him for over a decade I've traveled with him internationally I've spent dinners with him it doesn't make me feel good about what's going on here and as far as saving face I'm not sure how being In front of the world being called has cheese world today with this look at that book the nine of us that come about I think you will be pretty good in about five years I universe in my time to the chairman ranking member I thank the gentleman for yielding uh earlier said you started the campaign that's correct in 20 11 you started the campaign for President I'd States for donald trump I certainly did sir now that's news should trump run dot com wow 20 11 it was my idea I saw a document in the newspaper that said who would you vote for in 20 12 People said Michael Michael six percent of the people to turn around her said they vote for donald trump as President no I brought it into his office and I said to him Mr trump take a look at this as well wouldn't that be great and with that is where it all started yeah okay like I'm sure I'm sure he'd never thought anything like that until you came no I didn't actually want to get eight seconds I got eight seconds um what did you talk to Mr schiff about I spoke to Mr schiff about topics that we're going to be raised at the upcoming hearing whoa not just what time to show up actually what you're gonna talk about the gentleman time's expired wow mister saar baines mister sardines Thank you mister chairman and thank you mister cohen I know the other side is suggesting that um you are a incorrigible lying that you're lying here today I can't think of anything you have to gain at this point from lying I mean they talk about book deals and other things that you wanna do but I see a lot more that you could lose um by telling the truth today given the threats and other things that have been made against you and your family so that's how I'm interpreting And of course you brought documents with you as well to bolster the credibility of your testimony I did want to go back to an earlier line of questioning regarding the preparation um of your testimony before you came before the intelligence Committee you talked about a meeting um at the White House where the testimony was being reviewed and I think Said that it was at least one White House attorney jay sokolow um who is there and you will acknowledge that there was some edits that were made to your testimony um so on that topic who at the White House reviewed your testimony I don't know the answer to that um the document was was um originally created by myself um along with my attorney at the time uh for mcdermott will and emory and there was a joint defense agreements of the document circulated around um I believe it was Also if you'd buy it low represents vodka and jared cushion or um why did you provide um the testimony to the White House it was pursuing to the joint defense agreement that we were operating under what were the adults they came back substantive Lee when the testimony I'm I'm sorry I I don't know sorry I have to take a look at the document Did you um have a Do you have a reaction to why there might not have been in a sense of protest to what was gonna be false testimony that was gonna be provided no serval loss the goal is to stay on message it's just limit the relationship whatsoever with Russia short there's no Russian contacts is no Russian collusion there's no Russian deals that's that's the message that's the same message that existed well before my need to come and testify so it's an example of of where this idea is this mentality Of you toe the line whatever the story line of the narrative of the day or the month where the year is gonna be you tow that line whether results and false testimony or not I told the party line and I'm now suffering and I'm gonna continue to suffer for a while along with my family as a result of it so yes let me switch gears uh quickly before my time expires and you may not have direct knowledge of some of these things but you're offering us some very helpful uh perspective on how the trump world operates and frankly another reason I find your testimony fairly compelling and credible is because a lot of the things you're describing a lot of the Describe me is very consistent with what we all see every single day so it's not it's not a leap for us to arrive in the same place of perspective that you uh presented um I'm interested in in some of the activities around the inaugural um Committee the inauguration of the President there was a article um that appeared I mean pro public a it's a watchdog group about some Nation on pricing of things that the trump hotel where it looks like the um the rental that was being quoted was substantial even double what you would expect to pay according to what the market should bear and um some effect in the sense that the trump hotel was up charging to the inaugural even I couldn't afford to stay there and ad yeah and so I'm just curious do you have a sense of whether that kind of a practice is something that Um is consistent or inconsistent is it possible that that kind of up charging could be done uh inside the trump operation it did it did happen and gentlemen I'm like well I can say to you is I wasn't part of the inaugural Committee um I raised a lot of money for the inauguration but I was not part of it and there was a lot of um things in that actually that issues something that's also obviously we read about in the paper being investigated at the current moment thank you Mr Thank you mister chairman mister gone on my heart to tell you so that you know I'm sorry for what your family is going through out there for your family the word tells us clearly that a man's mouth this is destruction and his lips on the snare of assault and I icu a man trapped in that however I must tell you that I've arrested several thousand men and your mind many of them the ones that immediately become humble and remorseful at the time they're actually booked and while there Rated the quite pennington and then return to their former selves when they're back on the Street so respectful to your family what they're going through all the honesty to tell you that that's my sense of you good sir I'm gonna give you another opportunity to respond what you brushed off earlier regarding your own statement during this testimony from C span notation at two hours and 50 seconds in you stay Regarding your credibility that you've been accused of having no credibility that it is exactly for that reason I spent the last week searching boxes to find the information that I did so that you don't have to take my word for I want you to look at the documents and make your own decisions now the documents you are referring to Mr corner of the documents that you submitted in your with your testimony today is that correct that is if you believe they did those documents to be worthy of evidence for this oversight hearing today I leave that to you to decide to ask you again sir Please don't be incredulous this is a serious question where are those boxes that contain documents worthy of evidence to be presented to Congress and why have they not been turned over to investigate and authorities looking into some of the many criminal activities that you're allegedly cooperating it where are these boxes who knows of the where is this treasure of evidence the boxes that I'm referring to were boxes that were in my law office when the Fbi entered and seized documents Mr chairman I was moved as a gate in the thor it is of note The gentleman I just stated and that actions be taken for those boxes to be seized and reviews based upon proper warrant signed by a sitting judge you noted earlier today Mr cohen quite incredible lead one of my colleagues ask you regarding the television deal um you express wonderment that your predicament could possibly get you on television it certainly got you on television today has it knots are sometimes on television representing Mr trump going back into 20 11 well I didn't know you were Today really until until that the Fbi raided your home most of Americans didn't know who you were how many attorneys you think Mr trump has had through the course of his career quite a few out imagine you're you're just one that's in a trap right now and I understand you're trying to get out of it you're in a bind but I ask you good sir have you discussed film and book deals with with your your stated garner Mr Davis lanny Davis with Mr Davis you know but I have been approached by many people who are looking to do book deals movie deals and so on as he arrives in American but it it leads me back to my instinct that compares you to many of the men that have arrested during the course of my career mister chairman with all due respect that are that are from Here in to introduce the over side committed a hundred sixteenth Congress and American people as manifested in the way that it obviously is this is an attempt to enter uh President lay some sort of soft cornerstone for future peace meant proceedings this is the full intent of the majority I yield my remaining 30 seconds to the ranking member mister cohen earlier The United States southern district of New York is not accurate in that statement I'm sorry to say that really are you said that the United States southern district of New York attorney's office that statement is not accurate you said it's not a lie you said it's not accurate you stand by that yes I did not want it roll in the new administration but the the courts right so can I finish please I got exactly the role that I wanted there is no shame in being personal attorney to the President I got exactly what I wanted I asked Mr trump for that job and he gave it to me all I'm asking if it could be coming and I appreciate the chairman you're saying Statement from the southern district New York attorneys is wrong I'm saying I didn't write it and it's not accurate all right thank you well uh thank you uh one of the most significant events in the last presidential campaign of course was the dump of emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee dumped by wicky leaks Mr cohen during your opening statement um which was it the height of the election you testified you are actually meeting with donald trump in July 20 16 when Roger stone happen to call and tell Mr That he had just spoken to julian assigned is that correct that is correct right you said that Mr assigned ch told Mr trump about an up coming holding your opening statement quote massive dump of emails that would damage Hillary clinton's campaign so I wanna ask you about Roger stone's phone call to the President first of all was that on Speaker phone is how what you indicated yes so Mr trump is a black speakerphone that sits on his desk um Is it quite often because with all the number of phone calls he gets now January of this year 20 19 the New York times asked President trump if he ever spoke to Roger stone about the stolen emails and President trump answered and I quote no I didn't I never did was that statement by President trump true no it's not accurate and can you please describe for us to the best of your recollection you are present exactly what Mr stone said to Mr trump it was Conversation and he said this to trump I just wanna let you know that I just got off the phone with julian assange and in a couple of days there's going to be a massive dump of emails that's going to severely hurt the Clinton campaign and whereas Mr trump and Mr stone aware of where those emails came from that I'm not aware of did Mr trump ever suggest then or later to call the Fbi to report this breach he never expressed that to me did the President at that time or ever since in your knowledge uh indicate an awareness that this Conduct was wrong no The reason I ask is because on July 20 second on the eve of the Democratic convention wiki leaks published as you know the 20000 leaked internal dn C e mails could your meeting with Mr trump have been before that date Yes so Mr trump was aware of the upcoming dump before it actually happened yes right and I was there any records or I don't know whether he knew or not and I don't believe he did what the substance of the dump is going to be only that there was going to be a dump of emails and he was aware of that before the dump occurred yes sir alright in other any records that would corroborate the day of this meeting calendars perhaps I'm not imprisoned But I believe again part of the special counsel and they invariably best suited to um corroborate that information it was anyone else present in the room during the call I don't recall for this one no sir is there anyone else that Committee should talk to you about the president's knowledge of the the wiki leaks email dump well um again when he called rona graph uh yelled out to mister trump rogers online one which was Practice and that's his assistant that's just yes alright and during a news conference in July 20 seventh 20 16 then candidate trump public publicly appealed to Russia to hack Hillary clinton's emails and make them public he stated and I quote Russia if you're listening I hope you're able to find the 30000 emails that are missing now going back to Mr stone's phone call to the President do you recall if Mr trump had knowledge of the wiki leaks dump at the time of history Appeal to Russia I am not but the call with Mr stone you believe was before yes it's 20 seconds I'm sorry if you're I thought you told me that different set of um documents that got done so I was in Mr trump's office was either July eighteenth to nineteenth and yes he went ahead I don't know if the 35000 or 30000 emails was what he was referring to about where he certainly had knowledge thank you just one last question Mr rasmussen had been asking you some questions and one of the things in your answer was that Mr packer uh expanded other monies to protect Mr trump can you elaborate on what some of those other activities were sure there was the story about trump having a love child with an employee um with an employee and actually the husband of the employee works for the company as well and there was a elevator operator who claims that he overheard the conversation taking place between one of trump's other executives and somebody and he ended up paying like 15000 dollars in order to buy that story to find out Whether it was true or not and that's just one example of things that David had done over the years it was the reason why in the recording when David was looking to become the ceo of time magazine we were concerned about we'll call it a treasure trove of documents that have been created over the years that if he left somebody opened up the key to a drawer and find all this information so we were going to look to buy all of those life rights and so on then the sonics parents knowing Going thank you for testifying I join Mr congressman higgins and um feeling for your family they have no part in this uh you know I've heard all the testimony and I'm trying to decide what clay's trying to society is are you really um uh sorry for what you did he just got called and the thing that amazed me uh is that in your opening statement uh which let me quote last fall I pled guilty in federal court to felonies for the benefit of at the direction of and in coordination with individual one was that Present yes sir okay uh your your crimes were up your own to benefit yourself uh no matter what some of that yes no go through all the ones with the real estate with the banks uh on your he lock long you failed to disclose more than 20 million dollars in debt you fail to close uh disclose 70000 monthly payments um on your 14014 million line of credit and you failed to disclose that you had drawn on that so this was all for yourself this wasn't for the benefit of President trump Benefit Michael cohen so that's what I ask my question uh did you just get called uh and you work for this man for 10 years Mr cohen you came in here with with these with these uh he's a con man he's a cheat this is the very man that didn't you wire tapping illegally did you not wiretap President trump without his knowledge I did record Mr trump in a conversation yes is that lawyer client privilege is that something that an honest guy would do honest lawyer I actually never thought This was going to be happening and that that recording even existed I had forgotten what you did yes I did have you ever um I had a reason for doing it what was your agent because I knew he wasn't going to pay that money and David pecker had already chewed me out on multiple occasions regarding other moneys that he expended but this is a man that you trusted you take a bullet for you secretly recorded let me ask you this miss going have you done if you uh legally or Illegally recorded other clients I have recordings of people yes legally or illegally I believe that there are legal did you tell in New York state you don't have to do that so you didn't tell him no I did not ok sometimes I also use the recordings for contemporaneous note taking instead of writing it down and I find it easier if she will reverse would you like uh your trusted lawyer recording you I probably would not know that sir it is untrustworthy it's nothing people just would not do now your Bank loans that I just ran down did you have a default on any of these loans no sir so the Bank didn't Any laws no Bank has I am not into fault I've never found the pink group see um the he lock your referring to um I replace that from a different he lock um everything that of there is I don't owe banks any money about human dying taxicab today you have to sell them still well the ones in Chicago yes I do have to sell um however um new The answer is no I don't and um they are the industry is going through a major major correction because of ride sharing it's changed a lot of things the value of it is yes or right as the uh so no Bank would the banks make you alone again based on your record actually they did they did post the um the Bank um actually redid and they refinance the entire package currently hostess yes okay if they've never had to do a loan loss Reserve for the projected losses I don't know what they did but it's still the same now that I didn't No sir most likely they did I was on an audit Committee me say may have done that surf but that's for their own banking it's not for me it's my home I know you have to if they suspect you of lion which you admitted to if they suspect you of maybe not being able to make a loan payment they have a have to have a loan loss Reserve that's a hundred and 25 percent of what you just 20 million that to post uh in their account 20 million plus so they get no interest on it you know who pays and who pays for that the American public That bias but sir I'm not in default and I'm current on each and every one of those medallions and loans and I've never owed any money to first Republic Bank in fact at the time that I had the he lock I had more cash sitting in that same Bank then last question nothing the helix and my Morgan buying if you have been to prague I've never been to prague ever had I've never been to the Czech Republic you might bounce my time It's feared Thank you mister chairman and thank you mister cohen on page five of your statement you say and I quote you need to know that Mr trump personal lawyers reviewed and edited my statement to Congress about the timing of the Moscow tower negotiations who are those attorneys Chase utley of from the White House yes jay sec low I believe ed below as well and you have a copy of your original statement that you can provide to the Committee I can try to get that for you alright if you do though do that um the letter of intent for the Moscow tower was in the fall of two thousand and 15 correct correct was there an expiration date on that letter of intent and there was no expiration we could technically still be in effect today no it's been terminated it has been termed yes me ok did Mr trump To offer Vladimir Putin a free penthouse no man so that was that was felix seder was a marketing stunt that he spoke about so felix seder had suggested to you that Mr trump offer a penthouse to Mr Putin yes because it would certainly drive up the price per square foot are no different than in any condo where they start listing celebrities that live in the property in 20 16 did you travel to Europe yes Did you meet with um persons Associated with the Moscow tower project no it was for personal over snow my daughter was studying the queen mary in London so you did not meet with any russians know there is an elevator tape that has been referenced as a catch and kill product um it was evidently of Mr trump and a woman presumably this is trump is that correct are we talking about in Moscow or the trump tower elevator tape there's a there's an elevator Tape that went up for auction as possibly in 20 16 as you know I've heard I've heard about this and who is on that tape it's Mr trump with them along you and what happened in that tape the story goes that he um struck me along you while in that elevator because there's a camera inside which I'm not so sure um actually I'm certain it's not true I've heard about that tape for years I've known four or five different people including folks from ami um who have settled but there wasn't Went up for auction correct I don't believe that auction was real and I don't believe anybody I don't believe Mr trump ever struck this is trump ever I don't believe in are you aware of anyone purchasing that tape then I don't believe it was ever they never saw this tape no man I know several people who went to go try to purchase it for catching kill purpose it doesn't exist that Mr trump would never do in my opinion it's that's that's not something now you get to know um is there a love child there is not to divide You would pay off someone to uh that wasn't mean or it was a it was David packer so he paid off someone about a love child that doesn't exist correct it was about 15000 dollars okay um how many times did Mr trump ask you to threaten an individual or entity on his behalf and quite a few times 50 times more a hundred times more 200 times 500 times probably over the over the 10 years over the 10 years he asked you and when you say threatened with litigation or um an argument with um anti immigration uh nasty reporter that has is writing an article What do you know about uh let's go to your tape she said there's probably a hundred tapes voice recordings voice recordings and will you make them available to the Committee if you would really like them Did mister trump to contract to gavel that sir we would re Mr trump uh did Mr trump tape any conversations not that I'm aware of no Were you involved in the 25 million dollars settlement to trump University I had a role in that yes who paid the settlement I believe it was Mr trump I don't know the answer to the don't know the answer but you were involved in the us in a different aspect there's some reference to a businessman in Kansas being involved in that are you familiar with them I'm not familiar with that no alright uh finally near my 13 seconds left what do you want your children to know that I'm sorry for everything and I'm sorry for the pain that I've caused them and um Which I can go back in time thank you I yield back the only time it is part To the members of the Committee before we go to miss Miller for your so that you can land properly plan is a vote apparently coming up in about 10 to 20 minutes uh and what we would do is we will recess and we will come back listen up 30 minutes after the last vote begins God that not ins 30 minutes after it begins and we'll do that problem all right miss Miller I am very disappointed to have you in front of this Committee today quite frankly this isn't the reason the people of West Virginia sent me to Congress I find this hearing not in the best interest of the American people this is another political game with the sole purpose of discrediting the President if it was not already obvious there are members here with the singular goal in Congress to impeach President trump to achieve this They will waste not only precious taxpayer dollars but also time in this Committee and Congress as a whole in fact they will go so far as to bring a convicted felon in front of our Committee we are supposed to take what you say Mr cohen at this time about President trump as the truth but you're about to go to prison for lying how can we believe anything you say the answer is We can't this begs the question why are those in the majority holding this hearing I am appalled we could be focused on actual issues that are facing America like border security neonatal abstinence syndrome or improving our nation's crumbling infrastructure instead the Democrats are trying to grasp at straws let's talk about this witness from his sentencing hearing in the southern district of New York judge pauley stating Mr cohen pled guilty to a veritable Board of fraudulent conduct willful tax evasion making false statements to a financial institution illegal campaign contributions and making false statements to Congress each of the crimes involved deception and each appears to have been motivated by personal greed and ambition this is who we have in front of us today in our Committee someone who is about to be sent to prison for three years for evading his taxes deceiving a financial institution lying to Congress Among other counts one of the most appalling facts about this hearing is that Mr cohen has used his experiences with President trump both before and after he was elected for his own greed and profit I'd like some yes or no answers isn't it true you tried to sell a book about your time with President trump entitled trump revolution from the tower to the White House understanding donald jake trump yes that That happened early on when I was still even part I believe of the R n C and this book deal which you had with hatchet books was worth around 500000 dollars isn't that correct no more men how much more I think it was about seven 50 wow Mr cohen I did turn it down given that you continue to profit from publicly discussing your time with mister trump I worry that this Committee hearing the majority has given you will only serve as a platform for you to continue to lie and sensationalized and exact Straight wherever it suits you do you plan to pursue another book deal about your experiences Yes I would presume this book would be a little different than your latest path pitch but your new angle might please some new fans anything to sell books Mr chairman we've cancelled hearings on child separation and on other issues that are close to my heart for this media circus what a waste of time and money for a man who has gladly exploited the name of the President to promote his own name and fill his own pockets it pains me that we are sitting here adding another chapter to his book Thank you and I yield the remainder of my time to Mr Jordan I think the gentle lady for yielding earlier Mr cohen um uh the gentle lady from California talked about this uh this tape I'm sorry can't hear you earlier the gentle lady from California talking about this tape this elevator tape that you said does not exist that's correct I do not believe it exists but it was it also your testimony that the trump team was willing to pay to make sure a story about a nonexistent tape um never became public No sir that's not what that's not what I said they were willing to stop the false tape what do you looked we learned that this tape was potentially on the market that existed and so what we did is exactly what we did with all the other catching killed we look for it and if in fact that it didn't exist we would have tried to stop it that's what I would have done but it's about to die have never got it hurt it in and I can assure you one thing about Mr trump and many things he would never ever do something like that I don't see it like Thank you mister chair Mr cohen I'd like to ask you more about the details of the a hundred and 30000 dollar payment you made to stephanie clifford the adult film actress known as stormy daniels in order to purchase or silence shortly before the 20 16 elections first according to documents filed by federal prosecutors in New York you created a shell company called essential consultants llc is that correct it's correct and you created this company for the purpose of making the payment to miss clifford is that correct amongst other things yes you didn't use Equity line of credit to fund the account in the name of essential consultants llc is that correct that's correct you didn't wired a hundred and 30000 dollars to the attorney representing miss clifford at that time and wrote in the memo for the wire the word quote retainer is that correct correct can you tell us why you decided to use this complicated process to make this payment Well starting an llc is not as sophisticated means llc you call up a company you pay for it and they open it for you and the reason that I used the home equity line of credit as opposed to cash that I had in the same exact Bank because I didn't want my wife to know about it because she handles all of the banking and I didn't want her coming to me and asking me what was the hundred and 30000 dollars for and then I was gonna be able to move money from one account to the other into paid off because I didn't want to have to explain to her what that payment was About I sent it to the io account the interest on the lawyer's account to keep davidson California missed Angels attorney He would hold it in escrow until such time as I received the execute a dandy a nonce closure woman did Mr trump know you are going to this process to hide the payment yes why not just use Mr trump's personal or company Bank account to make the payment why was a distraction so important beside you not wanting your wife to know what his concern was that there would be a check that has his very distinct signature onto it and even after she cashed the check or you need to do is make a photocopy of it and it's kind of proof positive on exactly what took place so here he the goal is to keep him far away from as possible Can anyone corroborate what you have shared with us absolutely and that is keith davidson Allen weisel berg President trump now let's talk about the reimbursement according to federal prosecutors and I quote after the election cohen sought reimbursement for election related expenses including the hundred and 30000 dollar payment prosecutors stated that you and I quote presented an executive and executive of the company with a copy of a Bank statement reflecting the hundred and 30000 dollar wire transfer is that accurate that is accurate do you still Copy that thank statement just that actually made part of the exhibit so you will provided to the Committee yes man according to federal prosecutors executives at the company then and I quote agreed to reimburse cohen by adding a hundred and 30000 and 50000 grossing up that amount to 300 and 60000 for tax purposes and adding a 60000 dollar bonus such that cohn would be paid for hundred and 20000 in total executives of the company decided to pay the 400 and 20000 a monthly installments the 35000 over the course of a year is that accurate that is accurate what was the purpose of growth The amounts of essentially doubling what you had paid to missus miss clifford and other because if you pay a hundred and 30000 dollars and you live in New York we have a 50 percent tax bracket um in order to get you one 30 back you have to have two 60 otherwise my what if he gave me back one 30 I would only then I'd be out 65000 what was the purpose of spreading the reimbursements to you over the 12 monthly installments that was in order to hide what the pain was I obviously wanted the money in one shot for the preferred it that way but in order to be able to um Put it on to um the books Allen weisel berg made the decision um that it should be paid over the 12 months so that it would look like a retainer and did Mr trump know about this uh reimbursement method O he knew about everything yes thank you mister cohen so the President not only knew about the payments he knew and helped to hide the payments in the reimbursements to you and we discussed everything had to go through Mr trump and had to be approved by Mr trump and now you're going to And he's saying I'm going to prison yes myth I yield back I'm sorry if I'm if I Thank you mister chairman uh earlier yes I yield my time she didn't come earlier said I'm assuming New York New York's a one party consent state one person can record the other one without it being illegal correct but you also were a member of the New York bar I was yes how would you rate uh recording clients in the ethical realm of being a lawyer and it's not illegal and I'm not asking if it's illegal I'm asking if it's out I don't know that we have to leave and judgment of the bar Association so I think every other lawyer in here knows exactly where it is on the ethical standard um when you We had a hundred tapes were any of those types of other clients Yes and I think this is pretty amazing uh I really do did any of them waive privilege nope so five minutes ago in the Middle of our hearing on over sight you just immediately responded that you would review it hand over tapes to this Committee without any of your previous clients waiving privilege I'm not the only one in possession of those documents those documents are in the lives of all the ever else is in charge of those documents is not my concern my concern is I know lawyers that would go to jail before they would violate attorney client privilege and in a manner of a second you just said absolutely I will turn those over Just trying to cooperate sir at the expense of clients who have never waived privilege the already in the hands are of all of the agencies as I didn't ask what law enforcement determines to doing something and why you determined to do something to client privilege and attorney trust accounts are about the two most sacred things that you can ever do in your entire career as a lawyer and a matter of a second and the table with Mr trump completely that's out there is because rudy Giuliani waived the privilege I'm not talking about rudy Giuliani and talking about you and this is I don't know who's on those tapes only you know who is on those tapes there's a hundred of them the other It is also subject to the underlying point is it within a matter of a second one second you took no absolutely no calculation of your role as those clients counselor the role that plays in privacy and in the role that plays in a song by you took when you pass the bar when you signed on to the bar until recently were a member of the bar and you just immediately said if it helps me out in the today in front of Tv yes absolutely mister chairman you can have the and I think and that's Goes into what we're gonna talk about next briefly we talk about these tax these indictments on tax fraud and Bank fraud as if they are isolated incidents but they're not isolated and since a bad judgment these were intricate elaborate lies that created near that need to be held with constant miss or mean just constant deceptions of banks businesses associates accountants potentially your family um your received over two point million in personal loans from taxi company taxi medallion company one and those are those those were blown payments for a business loan correct no sir they would be you weren't receiving those can't go ahead those were payments that were made by the management company that was operating the medallions to you to me so and you those are just those were deposited into your personal account are in some instances your wife's account it was it was deposited into the joint checking account My wife and I that's located at the base of the building that we reside in and where those disclosed on your tax returns they are not they were not disclosed on my tax return and in fact when uh your your account and talk to you about those those deposits you told them you wouldn't pay for a memo that you didn't ask to be done that's inaccurate so that's that sentencing court and New York has it wrong um I don't know what Mr gets old wrote my accountant um there are series of issues His memo anyway including the fact he's almost directed me in an earlier memo to commit fraud but putting all that aside with Jeff get sl um the answer to that is I pled guilty all right and I made my mistake and I'm going as I've said a hundred times now right I'm not so sure why this singular attack on my taxes if you want to look at than a week I'm more than happy to show them if but everything that you have been already 20 minutes I got plenty about everything if we see That's right I'm gonna reclaim it is not 100 percent accurate well I'm done that's exactly why when it comes to the credibility why I ask mister Davis Mr monocle to please let's figure out how that that's my point without credibility because you under seas aren't isolated these are not isolated incidents of attacks these were constant deceptions whether it's rolling over a 20 million dollar line of credit to a 14 million dollar credit you went through great lengths to conceal that from one Bank while at the same time you are reducing your net income to another Bank these are things that happened on January one of eighteen January one of seven January one of 15 these are things that we're constantly involved on a my question is was it exhausting keeping track of all the lies you are telling all these people gentleman time has expired but you may I don't have an answer for him I pray for you for continuing the narrative thank you mister chairman mister cohen good luck on your road to redemption thank you could be a long way absolutely that is prediction as I remember and um that's particularly hard on your children so I wish you well and I wish your family well Mr cohen You sort of describe your road to here mister cooper ask you where when the moment was or moments when you decided you needed to change it strikes me there is a transition that you have you have illuminated here your period of time the 10 years working for somebody who you admired as a developer and then when charlottesville happened and quite frankly uh when the special counsel called you called you in obviously was a key part of it or you wouldn't be here um but the in between part I find really interesting and troubling at least in terms of appearances and confidence that the People would have in this institution and and democracy quite frankly so during that period of time I want to ask you about two specific if we have enough time first uh the trump tower so you were negotiating for this as you said it was to be the tallest building in Europe um in your guilty play with the special counsel you quote say it quotes cohen asked individual one that President trump yes okay about the possibility of injury uh President trump traveling to Russia in connection with the Moscow project and asked a senior Campaign official about potential businesses travel business travel to Russia uh what when did this conversation happened do you recall early on in the campaign and who is a campaign official cory lewin Dow ski What did you discuss in this beating Possibility of which dates that Mr trump would have availability if in fact that we were going to go over to Russia to take a look at the project and they watch and I'm sorry to talk like I'm unfortunately it never came to fruition because we were never successful in getting the first prong of what I needed which was ownership or control over piece of property and until such time there was no reason to come up with a date But when I first received the information request to go to Russia when I decided to do is spoke to Mr trump about it he told me to speak to Korea and see what dates might be available if I got the information I needed so it stopped because of the appearances or or didn't stop because the parties decided not to pursue it I'm so sorry I'm losing you question so why did the pursuit of the trump tower and that Mr Mr trump has now said of course he pursued it because he thought he might be going back into the development business why was the reason that the deal stopped Because he won the presidency ok so in that interim period of time you must admit it looks troubling that now that we know what foreign influence was attempting to do whether there was collusion or not it certainly appears troubling that you are mister trump was part of this negotiation and at the same time what we know perhaps separately that the russians were engaged in our election well I don't know about them being engaged in the election I can only talk for myself here I would say to Mr trump um in response to his question what's going on with Russia and I'm still waiting for documents and then that night at a rally He would turn it around into his battle cry of no Russia no collusion no involvement witch hunt okay and on a separate subject but somewhat related on January seventeenth of this year the Wall Street Journal published a story stating that you hire John gauge or the owner of a consulting company who works for liberty University in Virginia to rig at least to online polls related to donald trump did you hire him those were back um you can I believe 20 the 15 20 14 14 20 14 so you did hire if yes I spoke with Mr gaga about manipulating these online polls and did he use bots to manipulate the pole he used algorithms and if that includes bonds than the answer is yes yes that's accurate did the President have an involvement yes in directed you to do this yes what were the results of the poll exactly where we wanted them to be in the cnbc poll we came in at number nine and the Report he was top of the drudge report as well okay pull and reasons and also the cnbc Paul who's called the contenders and it was top 200 and 50 people that they named and it was supposed to be the top 10 most influential people and we just finished with earlier today who directed a comment to my colleagues and I'm quoting so I correct me if I got this wrong you said the more people who follow Mr trump the more people will be where I am is your expert That people in the administration will end up where you are sadly if they follow blind blindly like I have I think the answer is yes thank you very much Brian is to be Think of this chairman uh when I ran for Congress I talked about how Washington was broken but I certainly did not expect the level of political gamesmanship and partisanship and sheer stagnation of policies that would improve the lives of Americans that I'm witnessing today it is terribly disappointing to me that this Committee and its chairman chose to spend our time and questioning an individual that has zero probate of value and zero credibility instead of spending our limited time focusing on improving the lives of Americans creating jobs or streamlining the functioning of our federal government yet here we are Taking testimony from a convicted liar and not someone who has just lied to his clients or family or friends but testimony from an individual deliberately and premeditated lied to this body he lied to Congress through false statements in written statements he lied to Congress during his testimony he then amplified his false statements by releasing and repeating his lies to the public including the other potential witnesses yet now we on this Committee and the American people are expected to believe Mr cohen's testimony I don't know what you're in America that would believe anything Mr cohen says given his past actions in lies Mr cohen you stood before multiple congressional committees before today and raise your right hand and swore an oath to be honest is that correct that is correct and you lied to those congressional committees is that correct previously correct this or you stated the trump never directed you to lie to Congress is that correct that's correct therefore you lied to Congress on your own accord and then admitted to lying to Congress correct I've already stated my piece on that I knew what he wanted me to do I was staying on party line but he never directed you to lie to Congress he did not use those words no in your evidence that you provided this Committee a mere two hours before the hearing started were payments made to you by mister trump correct amongst other things yes yet other than your testimony here today there is absolutely no proof that those specific payments were for those specific purposes is that correct It's my testimony that the check that I produced as part of this testimony the 35000 and then the second check that's signed by Allen weisel berg and Don junior were two checks out of the 11 that were meant for the reimbursement of the hush money payment to stormy daniels so in your testimony on page 30 new claim and I quote Mr trump directed me to use my own personal funds from a home equity line of credit to avoid any money being tracked back to him that could negatively impact his campaign do you have any proof of this direction Because the payments are so no email Mr trump doesn't have email so no recording I do not have recordings no text message Mr trump doesn't text message so no direction other than your testimony today that that's what the payment was for and the fact that I paid on his behalf at his direction the bunny to keep davidson xy all account you're right there is no other test there's no other documentation I have so Nothing that you produce as part of your exhibits prove that President trump directed you in any way to make that payment I don't even know how to answer that sir well it's it's pretty simple there's nothing in the evidence that shows of the exhibits that you provided today that show that trump directed you to make those payments other than the non disclosure agreement that has been seized by government authorities just widely Sean I don't believe there's anybody out there that believes that I just decided to pay a hundred 30000 dollars on his behalf for you were you were his attorney for over 10 years it doesn't mean that I pay a hundred 30000 but it doesn't answer either that he wasn't paying you for representation of counsel ok How did President trump even knew you had a he lock I'm so sorry so how did President trump even though you had a he lock because we discussed it because I told him the same thing that I didn't want my wife to find out about it and as one additional rudy Giuliani himself came out and expressed that Mr trump reimbursed me for the for the money that was spent um to pay stormy daniels and did you tell Chris komo that you had no access to mister trump during October and November of 20 16 um so I don't know what you're referring to your interview with I would need to see the document like oh did you also tell Chris komo that you made these payments without telling Mr trump because you wanted to protect Mr trump and I was protecting Mr trump and you told him that you made these payments without telling him when they said that if that's what I said to Chris cuomo yes that was my that was my line and if this unsupported claim was true then it will be part of an ongoing investigation as evidence of a crime and the Department of Justice will not let you discuss it during your testimony here today is that correct I don't know Summer time is expired the answer so I did want to say one less think not only did I lie to the American people I lied to the first lady when the President called me and I was sitting in a car with a friend of mine and he had me speak to her and explain to the first lady so the answer is there you're you're not that you're not accurate and I don't feel good about any of this and this was not my intention it's lawrence so Thank you mister chairman um I just wanna put on the record as being a black American and having endured the public comments of racism from the sitting President as being a black person I can only imagine what's being said in private and to prop up one member of our entire race a black people and say that that nullifies that is totally insulting and and in this environment of expect The President to be inclusive and to look at his administration speaks volume so I have some questions I want to talk to you about this intimidation of witness Mr cohen you were initially scheduled to testify before the House oversight Committee on February the seventh but your legal team delayed your testimony quoting ongoing threats against your family from the President and attorney Giuliani is that correct yes ma' am and then on 20 ninth after you admitted that the president's negotiations over a real estate project and Russia continue well through the summer before the 20 16 election President trump called you quote a weak person and include you of lying and then on December sixteenth after eight 20 eighteen after you disclose that it was the President who directed you to arrange hush money payments to stormy daniels and karen mcdougal Conceal his extramarital Affairs he called you the President is a a rat Mr coin why do you feel or believe that the President is repeatedly attacking you you are stating that you feel intimidated asking us to protect you following your cooperation with law enforcement when you have access to 60 plus million people that follow you on social media and You have the ability within which to spark some action by individuals that follow that follow him and from his own words that he can walk down fifth Avenue shoot someone and get away with it it's never comfortable when the President of the United States what do you think he can do to you a lot and it's not just him it's those people that follow him and his rhetoric what is a lot I don't know I don't walk with my wife if we go to a restaurant or go somewhere I don't walk with my children I make them go before me because I'm I had fear and it's the same fear that I had before when he initially decided to drop that tweet in my cellphone I receive some and I'm sure you you'll understand I receive some tweets I receive some uh facebook messenger all sorts of social media attacks upon Whether it's the private direct message that I've had to turn over to secret service because they are the most vile disgusting statements that anyone can ever receive and when they start to affect your children that's when it really affects you and January twentieth 20 19 Mr Giuliani called your father in law quote a criminal and said that he may have ties to organized crime in Mexico and do you believe that the President Mr Giuliani publicly targeted your father in law as an effort to You can you elaborate why is your father in law being pulled into this I don't know the answer to that my father was in the clothing business um came to this country because they've been the night 19 72 73 the expulsion of Jews from the Ukraine became here uh to this country worked hard and he's now enjoying his retirement never in my life did I think that Mr trump would do something so disgraceful and he's attacking him because I care about my family and to hurt me he's trying to hurt them interestingly enough my father in law was biggest investments happen to be in a trump property so it just doesn't make any sense to me I wanna be clear any efforts to prevent a witness from testifying in front of Congress is against the law I want to be real clear about that and as the chairman has said retaliate against witnesses and threatening their families and members is a textbook mob tactic that does not benefit the President of the United States of this country and I wanna be on the This hearing is not about discrediting the President it's about the oval office that we take as members of Congress to have checks and balances and to meet the laws and the policies of this country to serve thank you and I yield back that's right It's going um I too want to offer my um heartfelt thoughts for your family what they're going through I know it's tough and for your time here today I know it's tough for you to stand here in front of this Committee the chairman suggested you volunteered to come here you testified that you are asked to come here is that correct you are asked to come here yes or no yes the combined total of the crimes for which you are sentence will bring the maximum 70 years yes or no yes you're going to prison for three years yes or no yes the prosecutors of the southern district of New York state to secure loans cohen falsely understated the amount of debt he was carrying an omitted information from his personal financial statements to induce a Bank to lend on Complete information you told my colleague here today that you did not commit Bank fraud not parsing different statutes which I understand could be on for clarity are you or are you not guilty of making false statements to a financial institution yes or no yes I plead guilty he said clearly to mister cloud Mr Jordan at the southern district of New York lawyers are being untruthful and characterizing your desire to work in the administration do you say again that the lawyers of the southern district of New York are being untruthful and making that characterization yes or no I'm saying that's not accurate okay so you're saying they're being untruthful did it right and not using the word on truthful that's yours I'm saying that's not accurate I did not want a role or title in the administration sure the lawyer got the title I'm sure the lawyers the sd Ny appreciate that distinction question you testified today you have never been to prague and I've never been to the Czech Republic do you stand behind that statement yes I do I offer into the record an article uh in known conservative news magazine mother Jones by David corn and which he says he reviewed his notes from a phone call with Mr cohen that Mr cohen said quote I have been to prague in 14 years I was in prague for one afternoon 14 years ago and quote question you as my friend mister armstrong rightly inquired offer to the Committee taped information involving clients with the bat of an eye do you stay Behind that yes or no so I'm sorry I don't you said it so fast you as my friend mister armstrong rightly inquired offered to this Committee taped information involving your clients for the bat of an eye do you stand behind that offer if the chairman is ks me and it's I'll take it under advisement now and it's not a problem in terms of attorney client privilege so I will turn it over you as my friend mister meadows pointed out misled this Committee even today in a written submission that contradicted your testimony you have suggested you're going to review that did you review are you going to review it in our next break to correct the record yes or no yes Question you helped out the president's campaign or were involved in the campaign as a representative as a spokesman even in your words today it was your idea for the campaign dating back to two thousand and 11 is that accurate yes or no yes two thousand and 11 is the year that sticks in my head for it's the year my daughter was born and it was the year I was diagnosed with cancer I was not then pushing for donald trump to be President I was fighting cancer even in two thousand 16 I was publicly backing a certain Republican from Texas some might guess who I was but you In And you either want to donald trump to be your President because it would be good for the country or you did it for your own personal advancement or both so it's sort of the two options real Americans in my district and across the country wanted the President to be President not in any way because he's perfect but rather because they are sick and tired of this hell hole they supported the President because they are sick and tired of the games that we're seeing here today they're sick and tired of politicians who refuse to secure the border balance our budget restore health care freedom and then get the hell out of their way so they can lead their life they're There will be a Mass about a hundred million dollars of debt for hour which means we blown through 300 400 400 and 50 million dollars during this rate in amassing debt 400 and 50 million dollars they're sick and tired of a Democratic party that willfully ignores cartel driven asylum crisis on our border that endangers American citizens in the migrants who seek to come here just yesterday and eagle pass Texas border patrol agents arrested an Ms 13 gang member in mcallen Texas federal authorities are offering a reward for a man to Mexico tied to mexico's Gulf cartel for his alleged role in Barry Murders kidnappings and home invasions in South Texas a Mass hundred migrant rush at the Texas border Texas border force brief closure of the laredo port this is this week this is what we're ignoring this is not what we're doing for the American people why we engage in this charade this is not what the American people sent us here to do This is an embarrassment for our country I talked to my beautiful wife back in dripping springs Texas just before the hearing I said don't bother I said don't bother watching she said I roughly expected don't worry I won't I have more important things to do and she like the rest of the American people have a hell of a lot more important things to do than to watch this I said amen darling I can't help but think that is what the majority of American people are thinking while watching this unbelievable circus I yield back Especially what Thank you mister chairman I've got a lot to do as well um I've got houses in schools to help rebuild in the virgin islands expansion of voting rights educational opportunities criminal Justice reform thank God the Democratic majority can walk and chew gum at the same time so we're here with you right now um mister cohen you learned well in the 10 years that you worked with donald trump what was your position with the gop in the up to eight months ago I was vice chair Of the are in see finance Committee you are vice chair of the finance of the Republican National Committee right correct okay um do you wanna say I was a Democrat until Steve wynn found out I was a Democrat made me switch parties that would be the way to do Democrat to be the vice chair good let's get to I don't we only have a little bit of time on behalf of the many members uh here who have expressed to your family uh our apologies to your family but I wanna apologize for the inappropriate comments and tweets that have been made by other members of this body um Former prosecutor and his former counsel on House ethics I think that the very least there should be a referral to the ethics Committee of witness intimidation or tampering under usc 15 12 of my uh colleague matt Gates and it may be possibly him being referred for criminal prosecution so I wanna put that on the record on may second 20 eighteen the president's personal attorney rudy Giuliani who was his personal attorney like you appeared on Fox news and referred to the president's reimbursement to you For the hundred and 30 payment for stephanie clifford as part of a retainer and on may third 20 eighteen one day after Mr Giuliani is appearance the President tweeted and I quote Mr cohen an attorney received a monthly retainer not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign from which he entered into through reimbursement a private contract between two parties known as a non disclosure agreement or n d a the office of government ethics which is the agency which the federal government with responsibility What the President needs to report publicly about his assets was puzzled by this it seems and they were skeptical that the retainer was actually in place and ask to see the retainer agreement on call of may eighth with the President the president's personal counsel sherry dillon replied that she would and I quote not permit og e staff to read the agreement because it is privilege miss dylan would not even let og e staff come to her office to review the retainer agreement Mr coin in a court filing made in August of last year federal prosecutor stated that quote in truth and in fact there was no such retain Agreement Mr cohen did you ever have a retainer agreement in place with the President for the payment to miss clifford no so was mister uh Giuliani statement inaccurate yes was miss dylan statement about the retainer agreement inaccurate I'm sorry miss dylan statement is about the retainer agreement is it inaccurate and her state her statement is what in her statement to them was quote uh not to permit O ge staff to read the agreement because it is privilege there was no agreement and is the president's tweet or his statement accurate I'm talking with in his statement was Mr cohen an attorney received a monthly retainer not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign from which he entered into through reimbursement that's not accurate um you've mentioned some individuals to my colleague from New York miss connelly and also in your testimony uh about mister uh wise and berg and other individuals miss rona who are those individuals uh they would the trump Organization they are there other people that we should be meeting with so Alan Where is the chief financial officer uh huh you got a quick leave us as many names as you can so we can get to them this man is a miss rona what is miss rhonda's rona graff is the mister trump's executive assistant and would she be able to corroborate many of the statements that you've made here yes she was heard office is directly next to his and she's involved in a lot um that went on a Mr cohen when the president's lawyers were having the discussions with the office of government ethics in 20 eighteen that they reach out to you to talk with you about these payments no man and what did you did you Anything with them otherwise and any other conversation I do not recall nope in the Committee obtained more information about these facts by obtaining testimony documents from the White House the trump Organization and the president's attorneys I believe so uh mister chair I think that those are the individuals that we should be speaking with um and I yield back at this time many will now stand in recess again we will come back listen up 30 35 minutes 35 minutes after the last vote began so optimistic going This is going we're talking about probably about an hour about an hour show I was all right so much substantial break here for the Michael cohen hearing is only about five Democrats left to question and Mr cohen of course we've seen the strategies unfolding during the day the President of the Democrats focusing on the most explosive potential claims from Michael cohen on the wiki leaks whether President trump knew about the wiki leaks leak of from julian assange during the campaign uh the hush money payment to stormy daniels and karen mcdougal during the campaign and of course Michael cohen's false testimony uh to Congress over the Moscow trump tower uh Republicans focusing on Michael cohen's credibility on the fact that the hearing is being held at all and whether cohen eventually Intends to profit from it but perhaps the biggest news in this last section had to do is something that Michael cohen could not talk about he couldn't answer several questions because they said they were still under investigation by the southern district prosecutors in the southern district of New York and then he was as this is there any other wrongdoing or illegal act that you are aware of regarding donald trump that we haven't yet discussed today yes and again those are part of the investigation that's currently being looked at by the southern district of I want to bring in our senior Justice correspondent pierre Thomas for more on that very active investigation right now Michael cohen perhaps the key witness well George is one of the things that he said is that he is in constant communication with the southern district of New York uh that was the news to all of us we knew that he had been interrogated uh again by them a post uh his sentencing but he said he's in constant communication with the southern district uh also he pointed out that he was being uh ask some questions about uh Either between trump or his surrogates regarding uh the post time after he was uh his home and businesses were rated so it's clear that the southern district is still actively investigating some aspects involving the President and his surrogates ok parent and some of our Nations our stations are going back to the regular program right now our analysis continues right here down here is what struck you the most the fact that in the southern district of New York we're not talking just about the molar investigation we now see that at least some portion of the investigation related to donald trump Himself is now in the southern district of New York and that's got to be a real concern for him um that's probably the worst thing I think that he's heard from cohen's testimony from the investigative legal perspective and the best thing that he's heard from the investigative legal perspective is when talking about the hush money payments you have Michael cohn saying in essence that there were two reasons uh that he was doing this number one to try and influence the election to make sure that this didn't come out and hurt him but number two so melania didn't find out because it Legal for them to pay to prevent melania from finding out it is not legal to pay if the goal is to influence the election and becomes a fight out in court if the prosecution has brought and it is as us attorney had to make these judgments on folks that were big fish in New Jersey but not nearly as big as the present United States we had a pretty simple rule if it wasn't a head shot he didn't take it and I think what happened today is there's key witness it would be Michael cohen on this issue and he's gonna go up there and say both of those things and if he says both those things presumably donald trump is gonna say no no that was just to For my wife and my children being damaged by this revelation and and I don't think it's a prosecutor bring that case I do think that the other thing and it brought this up earlier exit port Marine if a size this is not a hard argument to make dancers made it very briefly and very well the fact that no Republican in ours made that argument is stunning to me and feel they didn't need to I don't know what they were thinking but I think if they felt they didn't need to they were wrong someone needs to defend the President ited States here he's being accused of crimes by a guy who seemingly has inside knowledge of it but there is an explanation for this and no one The President that means either the House did not consult with the White House at all in crafting the strategy where they did in the White House dropped the ball but either way the President I guarantee I know him well he's sitting in Vietnam right now few minutes we've had no one fuming that no one 's defending wanted to bring that to you to see if they could we saw an ally the President yesterday my kids come out with a tweet intimidating designed to intimidate Michael cohen a right there we have not heard from the President during this testimony that we believe he's watching but we have to believe that given his ration of Michael cohen and what he has heard over the last several hours has him fuming right and it's let's just remind our viewers it's two Almost in the morning and Vietnam where the President is uh I don't know that we know as we're saying right here now whether this will end up being a bad day for President trump in his presidency this is certainly a bad day for President trump personally Michael cohen is pulling back the curtain on what he says it was like all those years in the trump orbit he says one of the most shocking things he said to me in this last this last few hours of testimony for about 500 times he says the President asked him to threaten people he says he doesn't give questions he doesn't give orders but he speaks in code and I was in that orbit for I know exactly what that code means he sounds very much like the same stuff that we heard from coney and from mccabe that he is making these demands without being explicit and on that point I do wanna play an Exchange he had with Joe connelly Democrat of Virginia was about his testimony over to trump tower in Moscow to get exit directly at that point so you had a conversation with the President the United States about Europe pending testimony before the House intelligence Committee is that correct that's correct what was the nature Conversation He wanted me to cooperate he also want to just ensure by making the statement and I said it in my testimony there is no Russia there is no collusion um there is no um there is no deal he knows it's all a witch hunt and it's he knows this stuff has to end did you take those comments to be suggestive of what might flavor your testimony Sorry he's been saying that to me for many many months and at the end of the day I knew exactly what he wanted me to say and why was mystic alone in the meeting because he was going to be representing Mr trump um going forward as one of his personal attorneys in this matter so it's sort of a hands off me correct um in any way final question to the President in any way from your point of view coach you in terms of how to respond to questions or the content of your testimony before House Committee again it's Difficult to answer because he doesn't tell you what he wants what he does is again Michael there's no Russia there's no collusion there's no involvement there's no interference I know what he means because I've been around him for so long so if you're asking me whether or not that's the message that staying on point that's the party line that he created that so many others are now touting yes that's the message that he wanted to reinforce terry moran so reminiscent of the of the testimony we heard from James call me a cecilia was just saying but one of the The things that Michael cohen has done in those conversations about his testimony over trump tower is implicate others jay secular low he also talked about um Jerry cushion or his lawyers were abbe lowell and whether they knew uh that they weren't necessarily telling the truth is they edited his testimony that could be fodder for more hearings that's right as you pointed out they are now amassing a witness list here and with every name that Michael cohen drops uh there are more people who are gonna have to hire their own lawyers it sounds like because he is essentially implicating them in his crimes but The hearing for the American people are you know President trump and what he has done and governor christie was talking earlier about before this last break about running against donald trump and finding an essentially bulletproof politically especially on the on the issue of veterans John Mccain that kind that infamous comment you know there's the old saying and Chicago politics we don't want nobody nobody sent uh somebody sent donald trump uh for whatever reason there are millions upon millions of Americans who believe he fights for them and so they're gonna fight for him until that's broken I think what we're going What we saw in this hearing the that rock solid partisan divide Republicans still staunchly behind them White evangelical Christians still at 75 eighty percent support I don't think what we've heard today so far while it will stir up a lot more activity congressional activity I'm not sure it's going to move the dial political that is that is the politics Chris christie the other the other point that Michael cohen could not talk about when we went to the southern district he was asked about his communications with President trump following the raid And the Fbi raid on his offices on Michael cohen's offices and homes back in in two thousand 17 that suggest at least at the southern district is looking at the issue of obstruction and I think you know that's what George have been saying all along that the southern district is the much more dangerous thing that today America got a preview of that you know prosecutors need tour guides their most effective when they have a tour guide through a particular world Michael cohen he's showing himself today to be a tour guide and have a particular point of view and when he's corroborated by written evidence I think he's an effective one but that Testimony you played in the back and forth I think that's where he gets himself a little out there because what he's saying I knew you're accusing the President ited States of something and you can't use that not effectively I don't think so coming you know I understand what he's trying to do and he may be very well telling the truth from his perspective maybe that is what he thought but it's very hard to impute the present United States based upon that and for prosecutors to do it and don't forget that I think one of the purposes of the question earlier about the conversations after the raid was about a possible pardon we're talking about a struggle one of the things they were getting at is did anyone dangle a part not just the President himself anyone connected to the President related to the President and that question wasn't answered that's one of the areas where he's saying I can't talk about it because there's an ongoing active investigation going on there you could be sure he answered them though oh I gotta get out there and you guys the women southern now and we have to remember that like what the southern district of New York knows more than we do now today volumes more right I mean when you when he didn't answer those two sets of questions what you now know his he's already answered them for the people in the southern just York they already know and they've already been Because it can't answer they answer and they've asked him not to talk about it writing meaning they still think it's important enough and so active that they've said to him please do not address these questions in front of Congress how big a threat to President trump if the southern district goes inside crosses that Red line that he said shouldn't be crossed cross the Red line of finances goes inside the trump Organization well I mean that's and they are inside of the already you heard Michael cohen talking about Alan weisel Burke and I want to bring in financial office right different evolving now you know this is a guy Who has been there since the donald trump's father was running the Organization ok so this is a guy with enormous history they've already gotten into him you heard him drop around the graphs them who's his longtime executive assistant so that Red line in my view has already been crossed Michael cohen signaling that already by the way he's talking and I think the other thing we have to remember about this is that the idea that terry said before everybody was out of people you have to get lawyers they already have them and there's no doubt that these people my guess is have already been contacted in one way shape Through subpoena or informal request of lawyers to start giving information based on what cohen told them probably weeks if not months and remember there's a difference between short term risk and longterm risk right short term risk you've got to look at Don junior and anyone else using the trump Organization etcetera is there any kind of next immediate risk for them legally based on digging into the trump Organization etcetera that's where the southern district would be working on there is no immunity for Don junior or jared cushion or whoever it is the only immunity here could be for the President himself ok let's go to mary bruce Congressional correspondent up on Capitol and shooter you're learning more if you talk to members of Congress about the kind of follow on there expecting And yet George we've been out here speaking to members of the Committee about the groundwork that they seem to be laying here through their testimony and many Democrats have said that this is just the beginning that there are many more close to President trump that they need to hear from her publicly including several members have told me Don junior the president's son they've also thrown around the name Roger stone Steve bannon and other people who may have been involved in some of these issues close to the President we've also talked to some of the Republicans on this Committee not surprisingly they're continuing to rail against cohen for his lies but fascinating Lee they are not speaking still about the substance of cohen's claims Jim Jordan the top Republican The Committee still a refusing to answer questions uh about the veracity of the documents here presented by Michael cohen and not surprisingly George Democrats still don't want to talk about impeachment they say that is simply too soon there's simply dealing with the facts in front of them today and maybe they're staying off of that I don't know if you had the chance to ask some of the repugnant Republicans they've come out but I wonder if you have talked to them at all about the point that Chris christie was making this whole strategy they seem to have of not really defending the President in any substantive way simply attacking Michael cohen Yet that is the big question that we're trying to pose your to all of the Republicans as they come out of this hearing it's very clear that they are in lock step when it comes to their messaging against cohen but they haven't had any response yet to what he's been saying to these allegations against the President to the evidence that cohen claims to be presenting here today you know cohen has said look you don't have to take him at his word that that's why he brought these documents that's why he has these checks and Republicans so far have been unified in not wanting to take on directly those substantive claims what they will ultimate If we can get through to them uh will be very interesting to see George okay now thanks to play another Exchange one of the Michael cohen had with katie held Democratic congresswoman from California over the hush money payments to stormy daniels and the president's involvement in February thirteenth 20 eighteen Mr cohen you sent a statement to the reporters that said quote I used my own personal funds to facilitate the payment of a hundred and 30000 dollars to miss stephanie clifford and neither the trump Organization nor the trump campaign was party to the transaction with miss clifford and neither reimbursed me for Either directly or indirectly was the statement faults the statement is not false I purposely left out Mr trump individually from that statement okay why did you say it that way because that's what was discussed to do between myself Mr trump and Allen weisel berg so it was carefully worded yes man great music coming up a reporter for the magazine vanity fair has reported that she interviewed the very next day on February fourteenth 20 eighteen about the payment and reimbursement and she wrote quote last February fourteenth I interviewed cohen in his office about the statement he gave the fcc in which he said trump didn't know about the stormy payment or reimbursement for it do you recall this meeting with the report I do the reporter also wrote trump called while I was there I couldn't hear much but he wanted to go over what the public messaging would be is that accurate it is did the President call you while you're having a meeting with the reporter yes did the President call you to coordinate on public messaging about the payment to miss clifford in or around February 20 eighteen yes what did the President ask or suggest that you say about the payments or reimbursements he was not knowledgeable of these reimbursements he wasn't knowledgeable of my action We ask you to say that yes move so what we have there is Michael cohen saying the President told him not to not to tell the truth told about those payments at the same time to see if you cover the White House every single day and we know the President was denying any relationship with stormy daniels was designing any knowledge about the payments including this Exchange on air force one Why am I feeling this Around the turn and you have Well apparently already had those discussions in the it's just they've been all over the map on this one from the very beginning I mean the President on camera there his lawyers have been on camera giving various explanations for who knew what when uh it really though if we'll just pause and think about what we're talking about here the President of the United States allegedly making payments to a porn star to keep an affair quiet I mean it is just gets back to the remarkable nature of what we're witnessing on a daily basis that has become sort of common practice that we're just talking about payments to a porn star and covering this White House and speaking of the porn star George uh storm Has a statement out uh right now that our team just got and she is um you know she and Michael cohen are bitter rival she says that he was among those who threatened her uh many times and she's now saying thank you for having the courage long last to begin to tell the truth it turned out to see if it thank you turned out Dan abrams that there was a lot more talk about Russia than we expected over the course of this hearing one of the headlines that the President might like for Michael cohen is that he said no collusion no collusion whatsoever by the President uh during during the campaign and the fact that Michael cohen was willing to talk about it so openly would at least suggest Just that Robert mueller is done with him yeah it sure seems that way um the fact that he specifically referred to the southern district of New York suggest that they're the ones he's still talking to they're the ones with the active investigation they're the ones who still feel that cohn has relevant testimony to provide so it may simply be that he wasn't in on any discussions there may be that there's no collusion that there's I mean we don't know but but I'll say one other thing which is the Republicans today spend a lot of time trying to undermine his credibility we've talked about that and they were referred to the Crimes that he's committed here the lying the Bank fraud the failure to pay taxes these are the same possible crimes that people in trump's orbit could be facing and you just have to be careful because one of the arguments up to this point has been this is minor stuff come on flynn's crime flynn got caught lying of pop it up was lying about this this is minor stuff et cetera well they're making it out now to be major stuff in in Congress now the Republicans are they're making it clear this is a big deal this stuff matters and you know we'll see whether those words come back to haunt them listen I think what If we look forward now we spend a lot of time talking about the witness list there's gonna be a real donny brook between the southern district of New York and Congress because southern district office has a lot more work to do and they're not gonna wanna bout those people up on the witness stand because a lot of those people are not gonna be in either the sentence already like Michael cohen they might not be immunized might demand immunity to go up there and speak and you're gonna get into this fight now that happens often between prosecutors office in legislative bodies where the legislative body wants to put on a show like we had today and the prosecutor is saying stop give us a time The criminal case so I think one of the really interesting fight is gonna be through you know the next months is gonna be the fight between the lawyers at the southern district who believe me I know how to fight and members of Congress who want to put on a show and it's gonna be very interesting to see how that fight gets resolved because if they don't have to be more hearings people are gonna be asking why and if they blame it on the prosecutors there gonna be a lot of people are unsatisfied and pierre Thomas one of the things we're waiting for of course is the muller report uh lots of different reports over the last several weeks or whether it's done when it's gonna be done what we're actually gonna see from Robert mueller and the attorney general uh William bar but We did learn from Michael cohen who was just talking to Dan abrams about his testimony at least that he had no evidence of collusion and we've had some warnings from the Justice Department perhaps not to expect too much from Robert mueller report well you're absolutely right George I mean it's clear from cohen's testimony today he offered no detail about any knowledge regarding any direct collusion between the trump campaign and the russians and that's the fact uh we don't know whether he would have been in the position to know that Information but as far as those who are supporting the President he didn't offer any details like that in terms of the muller investigation we do have every indication that it is near and close and that confidential report will go to attorney general bill barr in the coming weeks uh and you're right we don't yet know how much of that report will be provided in public to Congress and for the American public to view another headline from from Michael cohen he did denied again um appear ever going to prague which is of course one of the major allegations that so called steel dust ca also denied knowing of any kind of common Tapes of the President other one of the more sensational allegations that's right again he was very helpful in terms of making the case that he had no direct knowledge regarding again Russian collusion or anything like that but as a governor christie and others have pointed out over and over again the southern district remains an ongoing headache potentially for the President and those around him and I was struck again today how Mr weisel berg was placed in terms of the crosses of Congress in terms of bringing him there and asking him more questions about what the President did or didn't know about These payments and what the president's intent was in making the payments to stormy daniels and the playboy playmate okay pierre thanks one of bringing Alan dulles was now professor emeritus at Harvard law school's been allies of the President has been outspoken about his belief that the Congress should not be impeaching President trump Alan I know you've been watching today what struck you well first of all I'm not an allied to President I voted against them I'm against most of these policies I'm an ally of the constitution what struck me most is how much lawyer client privilege information was revealed and Testimony I was shocked that the president's lawyers weren't there actively objecting to disclosures made about conversations between the President and his lawyers uh even if even if even if the information provides proof of crimes that's not an exception the exception to the lawyer client privilege is only that the conversation itself before jill until criminal if it provides evidence of a crime later that's within the lawyer client privilege of that was surprising to me I just don't understand it maybe the president's feeling is let it all hang out and his credibility doesn't seem very strong That won't be a lot of evidence of collusion but look I I agree with the previous person that presents big problems are in the district of New York and other us attorney's offices so I do think the mueller report will give us a road map for further investigation and will not contain any smoking guns or proof of unlawful of collusion but this was not a good day to the President clearly to have his lawyer and intimate disclosed so many things about him that don't uh uh belong in the public domain and uh it It does raise questions about how powerful the lawyer client privilege is in weather today we're really winning it isn't one of the questions there though that in so many of these activities that Michael cohen was acting more as executive vice President of the trump Organization not as attorney was only his personal attorney in that respect after he after donald trump was elected well know the rule of uh somebody like cohen is very complicated and they will of the bar Association or that you basically resolve doubts in favor of the lawyer client privilege when a lawyer acts and multiple can Today the practice of law is very different it was a hundred years ago and many lawyers give the business advice many lawyers uh engage in activities like for example settling a case with stormy daniels or resolving that's acting in a lawyer client capacity now if you take it to the bar uh they may say no no this wasn't a loyal client the best city but the lawyers are always air by saying I'm not really prepared to answer that question until I get a ruling that it's not covered by the lawyer client privilege cohen seem very anxious to answer Possible question whether because he hopes to get a reduction in sentence because he wants to do the right thing people can judge that for themselves but he was too anxious to answer questions I think a prudent lawyer would have said let me consult before I answer that question because it may reach lawyer client privilege maybe not but you should err on the side of protecting the lawyer client privilege calling thank you kristen and that point Michael cohen did say today that nothing he says before the Congress today is gonna help him help reduce a sense what's key there is the information he's giving this other than it's the work that he's doing with the southern district in the fact that the words that he said today that would send a chill up my spine at the White House would be I'm in constant Contacts with the southern district I mean again now they have Michael cohen and Rick Gates and we had no discussion the inaugural to them he said no one asked Michael cohn of the inaugural concert being just one quick question about what it was but I mean I think you need you know they've got to tour guides now and they are a George and that's gonna be really concerning given what Michael cohen said today um and the fact that they get again no substantive defense from anybody and that is all we have time for thank you all very much for all gonna be back here I think it's around 4 AM tomorrow for the president's press Friends of from Vietnam and that some with Kim jong UN of course a full report on that on world news tonight with David muir tonight he is in Illinois have a good afternoon This has been a special report from abc news Let's Right We'll see And it is also C This is Number It's If you You know the And Yeah Okay Do not We have to Did you Some of the neighbors And you have you have to do It was a Most of the time and that's what this I'll do that That's great three To You know Okay Thank you So we And It's So This it is You can Come on We This is So This is a sneak Again Look at the other Beautiful Yeah ok Okay three Different This is Of the It's This is my Oh If you And Throwing out You They've come down a little calm water um Mr cohen um I wanna finalize it is relating to your truth in testimony form uh the form requires you to list your contracts where payments originating from a foreign government not from all foreign entities who we said we would give you a chance to consult with your journeys if you've done that in the you have any additional information My four attorneys continued to believe as they did before that the language of the truth in testimony form which I was given and signed it just right before this hearing and which requires disclosure of any contracts or payments from foreign governments in the last two years did not apply to my work for the Bank which is causing owned entity they advise that had entities been intended for disclosure that word would have been in the disclosure definition however if the committees Has a different view that I should disclose my contract with the Bank we'd be willing to do that right no that's chairman uh um let me finish sure um I wanna understand clearly you are you thought the advice of your counsel that right that's correct and your counsel advise you say what you just said is that right that's correct and you know that to be the truth is that right yes sir I will yield to the gentleman from I thank the chairman for his courtesy uh mister chairman is The making points of order and going back and forth on this perhaps a way to solve this is for the chairman to request Mr cohen give to this Committee all the foreign payments that he has received over the last two years whether they're an entity or a government because we have strong belief Mr chairman there's over 900000 dollars that came from the government of causing stand on behalf of Mr cohen in in it it is either the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth and the rules Mister chair chairman uh really look at foreign payments that come from or with foreign governments and in and the Bank is talking about is owned eighty one percent by the context and government reclaiming my time reclaiming my time and then we're gonna move on um what I will take I would first of all let me be clear uh I said to Mr cohen uh that if he came in here and lied I would nail into Then I will tell you yes he did more than once alright um so if there's any ambiguity I want that to be cleared up I have no problem working with you to make sure that straighten out cuz I don't I don't want to be a thing where he thinks think one thing we think one thing and we can we can clear that up alright alright we have a number of members that have been waiting I just want subject got a miss chairman I don't think we should be limited just to the Bank which has the affiliation with cuz I just and I think we should also look at Korea aerospace industries one of his other clients in any other client that's pouring that may have some connection to that respective country's government I hope it is in turn Look at all those and we get the exactly right is mister meadows want to claim my time uh we will take that certainly under advisement that you are uh I'm a man of my word we will do we will work with you and see what we can uh do to come up with that but I don't think that is an unreasonable requests um mister garner hello ghana yeah Mr cullen I wanna focus my questions on the smoking gun document you have provided this Committee this document is compelling evidence of federal and state crimes including financial fraud you provided this With a check from President donald J trump's remarkable trust account which is marked as exhibit five B it is a check for 35000 dollars and it is dated March seventeenth two thousand 17 and after the President took office it's right now on the screen do you see it sir yes sir to be clear the trump revoke a bl trust is the trust the President set up to hold his assets after he became President is that correct I believe so do you know why you From the trust as opposed to the president's personal account I don't know the answer to that did you think it was odd that he paid to ones from his personal account and he's paying you through the scheme of the trust I'll be honest I was just happy to get the check today you testified that the check was signed by donald trump junior and the trump C Organization cfo Allen weisel berg is that correct that is correct according to the criminal charges against you you sent monthly invoices containing false information to an individual identified as executive one weisel berg is executive one correct yes The criminal charge against you then States that executive one forwarded your invoice to someone referred to as executive to presumably donald trump junior with signing this check is executive to correct I believe so As federal prosecutors laid out in their criminal charges payments like this check resulted in numerous false statements in the books and records of the trump Organization and it's important for the American public to understand there's nothing to do with concluded collusion this is financial fraud garden variety financial fraud it was disguised as a payment for legal services to you but this was not a payment for legal services wasn't Mr cohen no sir it could give rise to serious state and federal criminal liability if a Corporation is cooking its books based on your testimony Vonnie today donald trump junior and Allen weisel berg directed this payment to u and approve this payment is that right mister trump initially a knowledge the obligation the debt myself and Allen weisel berg went back to his office and I was instructed by Allen at the time that they were going to do this over 12 installments and what he just To do then was to have me send an invoice in which case they can have a check cut and then yes the answer will be yes to your to your phone and donald trump junior obviously signed off on this yes it was it would either be Eric trump donald trump junior and or Allen weisel berg but always on the moisture Burke on the check and you think executive to his donald trump junior yes they knew that this payment uh were false and illegal correct I can make Conclusion you told representative Kelly that the President was aware of the scheme is that correct that's correct I guess what the American public to understand the explosive nature of your testimony in this document are you telling us Mr cullen that the President directed transparent actions in conspiracy with Allen weisel berg and his son donald trump junior as part of a civil criminal as part of a criminal Conspiracy a financial fraud is that your testimony today yes and you know if this criminal financial scheme that the President Allen weisel berg and donald trump junior involved in is being investigated by the southern district of New York I'd rather not discuss that question because it could be part of a investigation is currently ongoing but I just want the American public to understand that's wholly apart from Bob mueller investigation there is garden variety financial fraud and your allegation in the explosive smoking gun document suggests the President his son and his cfo maybe involved in a can scribble conspiracy and isn't it true Mr cohen that this criminal conspiracy that involved four people that there's only one person so far who suffered the repercussions and that's why you're in jail will be Yes the three other people though who were equally involved in this conspiracy You're gonna throw it is true thank you mister County you'll back my time Gomez thank you mister chair uh mister cohen I'm gonna tackle the president's tax returns during the 20 16 campaign you said you personally wouldn't quote allowing to writ release those returns until the audit are over unquote uh for the record nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax route where returns even while under audit by the irs Mr cohen do you know whether a President trump's tax returns were really under audit by the irs and two thousand 16 I don't know the answer I asked for a copy of the audit so that I could use it in terms of my um statements to the press and I was never able to obtain one you can so do you have any inside knowledge about what was in the president's tax returns that he refused to release I I do not can you give us any insight into what the real reason is that the President has refused to release his tax returns and statements that he had said to me is that He didn't want was to have an entire group of think tanks that are tax experts run through his tax return and start ripping it to pieces and then he'll end up in an audit and he'll ultimately have um tax taxable consequences penalties and so on so that's an interesting point that basically said he didn't want to release his tax returns because he might end up in an audit so could you presume from that statement that he wasn't under audit I presume that he's not under audit and the reason why Bring this up cuz I'm also the only Democrat on this Committee that also serves on the Committee of ways and means it's the chief tax writing Committee in the in the House of representatives and it's the only Committee in the House of representatives has jurisdiction to request an americans' tax returns and that includes the President of the United States my constituents need to know whether the President has financial ties that are causing him to protect his own bottom line rather than the best interest of this country can he be blackmailed because of his financial Business ventures including by foreign governments and I know the opposition is the first thing they're gonna ask her say is that he released his financial disclosure forms but I believe that there's other things we can learn from his taxes um United you have any idea what we can learn in those tax returns if we actually received we got our hands on him you know I've actually I've seen them I just have never gone through them here quite long but quite long um one of the things that I also find And so the way they're kind of attacking use to undermine your credibility is one of the ways is by saying uh they committed Bank fraud and tax evasion and the reason why is a big deal is that it really goes down to the people a person's character when it comes to taxes but yet the Republican minority has never asked to see his taxes right and something that for 40 years Democrats and Republicans alike have released their tax returns to prove to the American people that they didn't have a financial interest that would be leveraged by a foreign government but this minority To ask for his tax returns um I also want to kind of go on um I'm noticing a pattern I'm noticing a pattern about the President and those in his inner circle special counsel Robert miller's team has indicted or receive guilty pleas from 34 people and three companies that we know of the latest being longterm trump advisor Roger stone that group includes six former trump adviser It appears that the President has a fondness for entrusting those who will one lie for him to break the law for him three cheat the system for him essentially he wants to surround himself with people who are just like him would you agree with that statement From the facts and circumstances it appears so mister um mister cohen the American people have a lot of questions when it comes to this President to get this kind of conduct when he went to helsinki and he bowed before uh about Vladimir Putin and nobody can really understand why he acts the way he acts and we believe that the way we get those answers is really looking at everybody that surrounds him who has been Associated with and his tax returns because that is the only way that we can get down to the to the bottom line thank you and I yield Mister chairman thank you miss chairman I have a unanimous consent request alright go ahead um I ask unanimous consent that we read into the roller for the record a tweet from doctor darrell Scott which says Michael cohen ass no beg me repeatedly to ask voters to give him a job in the administration he is still lying under oath I ask unanimous consent I'm guessing I have one more uh from Bob d dl uh getting sick watching these hearings I know Michael cohen personally for many years and he told me several times he was very angry and upset that he didn't get a post in the White House and that he Would do any do what he has to do now to protect his family close quote I ask that mean I think you mister chairman two quick ones uh and then if we got other ones but we're gonna do you um mister ranking member then we will do the other ones at the end because I am somethings to die wanna get inside alright I ask unanimous consent that an article in salon magazine written by stanley brand former House counsel to tip o'neill title the article is oversight Committee session with Michael cohen looks like an illegitimate show hearing of That's order ask unanimous consent that a letter that mister meadows and I sent to you the chairman requesting that you call deputy attorney general rod rosen stein to testify at this hearing also be part of the record thank you I mean this meeting can I can I respond uh just one second alright um the article Mr barron yeah uh I just wanna do a different right away um we when we saw that article um uh mister uh ranking member uh we knew that it was I mean just want basic sit means sit that the cases that Mr brand uh youth are definitely distinguishable for what's going on here and so we we got uh urban be nathan former general counsel of the House from two thousand 17 to 20 10 and says in short the Committee has ample jurisdiction and responsibility to hear and consider the upcoming voluntary testimony Mr coyne that's dated February 20 19 20 fifth 20 19 and uh I wanna Internet into record without objection so ordered Um We're await missile to cortez thank you mister chairman mister cohen I'd like to quickly pick up on some previous lines of questioning before getting into my own so I may go a little quickly and to get it all in five minutes uh first my colleague from vermont had asked you and I have some several questions about ami the parent and the parent company of the National enquirer and uh in that you mentioned a treasure trove a quote treasure trove of documents in David peckers office relating to information assembled from all these catch and kill operations um against people who potentially had damaging information on the President you also mention that the President was very concerned about the whereabouts Of these documents and who possess them does that treasure trove of documents still exist I don't know I had asked David pecker for them so you would say the person who knows the whereabouts of these documents we David packer David pecker Barry levine or um dylan Howard thank you um secondly I want to ask a little bit about uh your conversation with my colleague from Missouri about acid inflation I'm to your knowledge did the President ever provide inflated assets to an insurance company Yes who else knows that the President at this Allen weisel berg Ron Lieberman and Matthew kalahari and we're with the Committee find more information on this do you think we need to review his financial statements and his tax returns in order to compare them yes indeed find it at the trump org thank you very much uh the last last thing here uh the trump golf Organization currently has a golf course in my home borough of the bronx uh trump links I drive past it every day going between bronx and going to the bronx and queens um in fact the Washington Reported on the trump links bronx course in an article entitled taxpayers built this New York golf course and trump reaps the rewards were many that that article is where many new yorkers and people in the country learn that taxpayers spent a hundred and 27 million dollars to build trump links in a quote generous deal allowing President trump to keep almost every dollar that flows in on a golf course built with public funds and it doesn't seem to be the Only time the President has benefited at the expense of the public Mr cohen I want to ask you about your assertion that the President may have improperly devalued his assets to avoid paying taxes according to an August 20 fourth through August 20 first 20 16 report by the Washington post while the President claimed in financial disclosure forms that trump National golf club in jupiter Florida was worth more than 50 million he had reported otherwise to local tax authorities that the course was worth quote no more than five million Mr Do you know whether this specific report is accurate it's identical to what he did at trump National golf club at briar cliff manner do you know to your knowledge was the President interested in reducing his local real estate bills tax bills yes and how did you do that what you do is you deplete the value of the asset and then you put in a request to the tax Department for a deduction thank you now in October 20 eighteen the New York times revealed that quote President trump participated in dubious tax schemes during the 19 Including instances of outright fraud that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents in further stated for Mr trump quote he also helped formulate a strategy to under value his parents' real estate holdings by hundreds of millions of dollars on tax returns sharply reducing his tax bill when those properties were transferred to him and his siblings Mr cohen do you know whether that specific report is accurate I don't I wasn't there in 19 nineties who would not To those questions Allen weisel berg and would it help for the Committee to obtain federal and state tax returns from the President and his company to address that discrepancy I believe so thank you very much I yield the rest of my time to the chair Expressly Thank you mister chairman um one more time I'm mister chairman I just wanna thank you uh for your leadership in the way in which you can put yourself and I know there's some that would have you believe that the more you say something the more true it is but in fact this Committee thanks to your leadership and our Democratic majority has been doing the work of the American people before this Committee alone we look at the issue of making election day a federal holiday reducing drug pricing uh and pursuits the penis to reunite families and just recently uh before we returned here Try to pass a universal background check uh gun bill so we're doing the business of the American people including today uh it is been said that the best sunlight sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectant ce electric like is the most efficient policeman will let there be light because the point of oversight is for us to pursue the trust to pursue the truth and Justice for the American people to understand if To seed and corruption are threatening American democracy and indeed our safety Mr chairman charities should not be abused as personal piggy banks it is both against the law and extremely unfair to charities that play by the rules a line of questioning that we have uh not yet addressed and we've been clearly absent in tackling is that the abuses of the trump foundation now the president's charitable foundation agreed to dissolve in response to an ongoing investigation and a lawsuit by the New York attorney general the New York attorney Ow what it called quote clear and repeated violations of state and federal law including quote repeated and willful self dealing by the trump administration administration apologies by the foundation if I understand your opening statement correctly in mid two thousand and 13 you arrange for a straw purchaser to 60000 dollars for a portrait of Mr trump painted by the artist William quickly at a charity auction is that correct it's correct why would the President want to bid up the price of something and he was ultimately paying for it it's all about ego how was it paid for I believe it was paid for by a check from the trust and abused and again you know uh this is not a uh a partisan pursuit here I think ultimately we're demonstrating is patriotism this is about what is right and just for the American people that the straw purchaser purchase the painting and then the foundation funds reimburse the straw purchaser can you explain the mechanics of that payment I'm not involved with the found ok did the President know what was happening oh yes and how did you know he knew what was happening because he asked me to find the straw better to ensure that his painting which was going last in the auction would go for the highest amount um of any of the paintings that have been put on the auction block for the day and what happened to the painting I believe it's in one of the club's okay um according to the New York attorney general in March two thousand and 14 Mr trump again used the foundation to pay 10000 dollars for the winning bid on another portrait of Mr trump that ended up as decor and one of his golf courses in Miami Mr cohen are you familiar with that transaction yes are you aware of any other instances where the trump foundation was To benefit the trump family yes could you elaborate so there was a contract that I ended up um creating on Mr trump's behalf for the um ukrainian our guard by the name of victor pinch ship and it was that Mr trump was asked to come in to participate in what was the ukrainian American economic forum unfortunately wasn't able to go I was able to negotiate 15 minutes by skype where they would have a camera very much like uh television camera very much like that one and they would translate Mr trump to the question and he would respond back and I negotiated a fee of a hundred and 50000 dollars for 15 minutes I was directed by Mr trump to have the contract done in the name of the donald J trump foundation as opposed to donald J trump For services rendered thank you any other abuses of the foundation that you'd like to share again it is um against the law and again extremely unfair to charities that are playing by the rules um not at this time but I think of one how ok that's a one and then for the balance of my time Would you agree that someone could deny a rental units to African Americans uh lead the birther movement referred to the diaspora as shit hole countries and refer to White supremacist as fine people have a black friend and still be racist yes I agree don't wait time is it you made me answer the question I did yes that's chairman I have two unanimous consent since where we're finishing up before we get done I wanna go ahead and okay just give me give me one second I just want yes um I wanted to Get some of the evening I come to you okay michelle even they've been waiting all day for Mr Lee thank you mister chairman thank you all of you for centering this Committee on our soul purpose um is exposing the truth and some of my colleagues can handle the truth and this is unfortunate because it's the Center of what is protecting our country right now the people at home are frustrated Mr cullen and they want criminal schemes to stop especially those from the oval office Mr cohen Upset and know that my residents feel the same way that a man you worked for for the past 10 years is using the most powerful position in the world to hurt our country solely for personal gain we are upset that some of our colleagues here are so disconnected and what it means what it means to have this President of the United States sending checks to cover bribe payments not hush payments bribe payments you made on his behalf one in two thousand and seventeenth of March and another August two thousand 17 after he was sworn in as President they are upset that My colleagues are trying to discredit your testimony by some of your own unlawful acts and lies that they are disconnected with the fact that you were the personal lawyer for this President of the United States that this President chose you as his legal counsel my stance has always been the same Mr chairman based on the facts not on future reports that we're all waiting on my residents back home don't need a collision cause with a foreign government to know this President individual one has disregarded the law of the land the United States constitution and that he has missed Use his pardon powers and the sentencing memo Mr cohen filed by the federal prosecutors in New York in December of last year they stated quote in particular and as cohen himself has now admitted with respect to both payments he acted in coordination with and at the direction of individual one Mr cohen as you know President donald J trump brand comes first not the American people based on what you know now based on what we know now is that individual one used his money and businesses and platform to rich to enrich himself his brand and then the process director Mr cohn to commit multiple fennel final felonies and you covered it up correct that's correct you called it protecting his brand correct and tim as well Mr cohen with this do you think the President of the United States is making decisions in the best interest of the American people no I don't especially those who said that he used horrible words about like African Americans Muslim Americans and immigrants yes Just to make a note mister chairman just because someone has a person of color a black person working for them does not mean they are racist and it is insensitive the someone even say it's the fact that someone would actually use a prop a black woman in this chamber in this Committee Is alone racist in itself donald trump is setting to chairman I asked her words be taken down a President or reclaim my time mister chairman the President mister chairman office can be instituted in the rules clear cover up and hold on to business assets to break campaign finance laws and constitutional clauses what we have here mister chairman is criminal conduct and the pursuit of the highest public office by Mr cullen an individual one I hope that the gravity of the situation hits everyone in this body the courtroom and in Congress and across this country thank you Chairman I yield the rest of my time it's mister chairman I asked her words when she's referring to an individual member of this body be taken down and stricken from the record I'm sure she didn't intend to do this but if anyone knows my record as it relates It should be you mister chairman mister chairman I would like to hold on I want the words read no no no no we want to know exactly what she said about the colleagues excuse me would you like to rephrase that statement necessarily thank you mister chairman I can actually read it from here Just to make a note mister chairman that just because someone has a person of color a black person working for them does not mean they are racist and it is insensitive that someone would even say racist say say it is racist in itself and to use a black woman as a prop to move to prove it otherwise and I can submit this for the record if a colleague is thinking that that's what I'm saying I'm just saying that's what I believe to have happened it is as a person of color in this Committee that's how I felt at that moment and I wanted to express that but I'm not calling the gentlemen um A racist for doing so I'm saying that in itself it is a racist act well I hope not mister chairman cuz I need to be clear on this I'll take your mister chairman mister mister mister meadows wait a minute I have defended you and about to member fall Santa knows I'm the chair yes or are you like you I will clear this up now Mr lead B is it I wanna make sure I understand you did not you are not intending to call mister meadows a race is that right no mister chairman I do not call mister meadows are racist I am trying as a person of color Mr Just to express myself and how I felt at that moment and so just for the record that's what was my intention alright yeah it's been it's a matter of mister chairman there's nothing more personal to me that my relationship my nieces and nephews are people of color not many people know that you know that it's mister chairman and to indicate that I ask someone who is a personal friend of the trump family Who is work for me who knows this particular individual that she's coming in to be a prop it's racist to suggest that I asked her to come in here for that reason Mr President the president's own person she's a family member and she she loves the this family she came in because she felt like the President United States was getting falsely accused and mister chairman you are you and I have a personal relationship that's not based on color and into even go down this direction is is wrong mister chairman first of all I want to thank you gentlemen for What you have stated um if there's anyone who is sensitive with regard to race it's me son a former sharecroppers that would basically slaves so I get it um I listened very carefully to miss sally and I think and I don't wanna put that gonna put words in her mouth but I think she said that she was not calling you a racist and I thought that we could clarify that because you've missed Mister meadows you know uh and of all the people on this Committee I've said it and got in trouble for it then you're one of my best friends I know that shocks a lot of people and been like what has been given but you are and I would do and I could see and feel your pain I feel it and so and I don't think necessarily intended to cause you that that that kind of pain and that kind of frustration did you have a saying in the cell if I might yield to give we have to straighten this out and to my colleague mister meadows at that was not my intention and I do apologize That's what it sounded like that I said someone in general and as everybody knows in this chamber I'm pretty direct so I if I wanted to say that I would have but that's not what I said and uh thank you mister chairman for allowing me to clarify but again I said someone and then there was not referring to you at all as a racist I think the gentlewoman for her comments I think the chairman for uh working to clarify this and um and I appreciate that the chairman said intervening no it's gentlemen First of all thank you uh for allowing us to resolve that um the gentleman and ask a little bit earlier I will withdraw my request oh you don't wanna do the uh you know I can't think I needed unanimous consent but I need I think I need to officially withdraw my request okay they will be striking for what do I do it you did it I did all right sounds good um now I will recognize you for your unanimous consent I think you wanna uh put in the record some documents yeah thank you mister chairman I ask unanimous consent that we uh with forth in the record the bandage bandit e fair article which indicates that Michael cohen must be the most gifted consultant in the America uh outlining uh his insights in the government health care and policy and really state suggesting that he's not it's not a real company but uh and just like he's not a lawyer without objection so ordered thank you I ask unanimous consent that the La times article of July sixteenth two thousand eighteen uh actually be put in the record which outlines the one point two million dollar payment and their misgivings thereafter without objections ordered any other unanimous consent request it's nice That's nice thank you mister chairman I ask unanimous consent to make February ninth 20 19 Washington post profile of Michael cohen told Michael cohen secret agenda part of the record the story shows going to be a selfish manipulator who is all about himself it even has a faults and it noted about how he wants to claim to deliver his own son is uh on the baby without objection so ordered and thank you miss chairman ask unanimous consent to make the may ninth 20 eighteen Washington post article South Korean Paid Michael cohen a hundred and 50000 dollars as it's all contract from us government as part of the record the article reported Korea aerospace industries paid a shell company run by cohen we've got a disorder thank you mister chairman I ask unanimous consent to make Michael cohen sentencing statement to the southern district of New York part of the record the statement to stab lish is that Michael cohen continues to falsely blame his crimes on blind loyalty to the President but only cohen is For his many false statements to financial institutions and the irs and I would definitely order asking animus consent to make the August twentieth 20 eighteen cnn article Fed scrutinizing Michael cohen's former accountant and Bank loans part of the record cohen's accountant was subpoenaed to appear before a Grand jury and required a lawyer in a sentencing memo prosecutor said cohen attempted to blame his tax evasion on his accountant without objections order to more quickly asking animal Santa make the February 26 20 19 order filed by the appellate division of the state of New York regarding disciplinary proceedings against Michael cohen part of the record this order which proactively apply starting 20 uh February 28 establishes cohen committed a serious crime and cease being an attorney when he was convicted of lying to Congress without objection so ordered and finally this chairman I ask unanimous consent to make the July 26 20 eighteen Washington post article Michael cohen secretly recorded trump does that make him Lawyer part of the record the article describes potential ethical violations of a lawyer cohen recording his client trump without the client's knowledge about objections to order Mr Norman thank you mister chairman I ask unanimous consent to make the January eighteen two thousand 19 huffington post article 11 tweets from the fake fan account stud Michael cohen paid to fawn over him part of the record we've got his described as a place for women who love and support of Michael going strong pit bull said Simple no nonsense business oriented rated like we have a lot of decades ordered Mr Wright thank you mister chairman uh I would uh ask unanimous consent to make the April twentieth two thousand eighteen uh article in mother Jones entitled Michael cohen says he's never been to prague he told me a different story uh part of the record without objection so ordered and you sir Very well I am from what's going on in vote something including remarks I'm a before I do that um do you have anything you'd like to say yes yes mister chairman I would I have some closing remarks I would like to see myself as a appropriate time you can do it now thank you so first I wanna thank you chairman I appreciate the opportunity to share some final thoughts I've acknowledge I have made my own mistakes and I have owned up to them publicly and Both but silence and complicity in the face of the daily destruction of our basic norms and civility to one another will not be one of them I did things and I acted improperly at times of Mr trump's behest I blindly followed his demands my loyalty to Mr trump has cost me everything my family's happiness friendships my law license my company my livelihood my honor my reputation Sue my freedom and I will not sit back say nothing and allow him to do the same to the country indeed given my experience working for Mr trump I fear that if he loses the election in 20 20 that there will never be a peaceful transition of power and this is why I agreed to appear before you today and in closing I'd like to say directly to the President We honor our veterans even in the rain you tell the truth even when it doesn't add Grand eyes you you respect the law and our incredible law enforcement agents he don't villain eyes them you don't disparage generals goldstar families prisoners of war and other heroes who had the courage to fight for this country you don't attack the media and those who question what you don't like or what you don't want them to say and you take response Ability for your own dirty deeds you don't use your power of your bully pulpit to destroy the credibility of those who speak out against you you don't separate families from one another or demonize those looking to America for a better life you don't vilify people based on the God they pray to and you don't cuddle up to our adversaries at the expense of our allies and finally you don't shut down the government before Christmas and new year's just to simply appease your base this behavior is church Denigrate the office of the President and it's simply UN American and it's not you so to those who support the President and his rhetoric and his rhetoric as I once did I pray the country doesn't make the same mistakes that I have made but pay the heavy price that my family and I are paying and I thank you very much for this additional time to chairman thank you very much uh the ranking member has a closing statement thank you mister chairman Um we know Mr cohen has been dishonest in the past that's why he's going to prison and two months but there are things today that he said during the several hours of questioning that just don't add up either he said he never defrauded any Bank he was having a conversation questioning from Mr cohn or obviously that's not true because he's going to prison for that very offense he said today he was a good lawyer who understood the need to represent his client his client with legal advice but in his written test He said he never bothered to consider whether payments to women for improper uh whether payments to women were improper much less the right thing to do he attested in his sign truth in testimony form that he did not have any report of contracts with foreign government entities earlier he admitted to having a consulting agreement with at least at least two foreign entities owned in part by foreign governments be the Bank of cuz I could stand and Korea airspace industries of South Korea He said to chairman cummings that donald trump directed him in the trump Organization cfo Allen weisel berg to go back to his office and figure out how to make a hundred and 30000 dollar payment but in his testimony he says Mr trump directed me to use my own personal funds from the home equity line of credit to avoid any money being traced back to him that could negatively impact the campaign and in response to a question about him paying to set up the fake twitter account at women for cohen that he didn't direct the Commission of that twitter account he says I didn't set that up and it was done by a young lady that works with the firm when in fact he did ask the it Red fish to set it up according to the owner of Red finch and finally he said he didn't want a job with the administration even though the attorneys with the southern district a district of New York stated that this was a fact when asked about this they said I wouldn't call them liars but that statement is not accurate Mr chairman I think maybe more importantly is what we should have been doing today mister meadows and I sent you a letter asking us asking you to have mister rosen steen here I think it's important to know that last week when you announced the Mr cohn was This week just happened to be the very same week that we learned the deputy attorney general of the United States was thinking about wearing a wire to record the commander in chief was actually contemplating talking to Cabinet members and invoking the 20 fifth amendment that's what we should be focused on not this sad display we've had to go through the last several hours and again it's not my words you can take the words of the former general counsel for the Representatives under tip o'neill so I hope we've learned some things here today um but mister mister chairman as I said earlier your first big hearing the first announced witness of the hundred and sixteenth Congress is a gentleman who is going to prison and two months for lying to Congress I don't think that's what we should be focused on your back thank you very much You know I've said here and I've listened to all of this And it's very painful It's very painful um Eat you um made a lot of mistakes it's gone and you've been minute that And um You know one of the said as far as to this whole thing is it's a very innocent people are hurting to And you acknowledge that and um that's your your family And so you come here today and You I believe in my heart after I you know when I practiced law I represent a lot of lawyers who got in trouble And You've come saying I made my mistakes but now I want to change my life um And you know if we if if we um as a nation He did not give people an opportunity after they made mistakes to change their lives Um Whole lot of people would not do very well I don't know where you go from here uh as I said here and I listen to both sides um I just felt as if and you know people you know using my words that they took from me didn't give me any credit we're better than this we are so much we really are as a country we are so much better than this And you know I told you uh and for some reason Mr cohen I tell my children I say when bad things happen to you do not ask the question why did it happen to me asked the question why did it happen for me I don't know why this is happening for you But it is my hope that a small part of it is for our country to be better If I hear you correctly it sounds like You're crying out for a new normal for us getting back to normal Sounds to me like you want to make sure that our democracy stays in tack when I had the one meeting I had with President trump I said to him the greatest gift that you and I Mr President can give to our children is making sure that we give them a democracy that is intact A not democracy better than the one that we came up on and I'm hoping that the things you said today will help us begin to get back there you know I mean come on now I mean when you got according to the Washington post I President has made at least eight thousand 700 and eighteen eight thousand eighteen falls in this a misleading statements assigning What we teach our children I'll do mine ad And for whatever reason you sound like you got caught up in it you got caught up in it you got caught up in it And some kind of way I hope that you will I know that is painful going to prison I know I know it's gonna be painful being called the read and let me let me explain a lot of people don't know the significance of that but I live in the inner city of Baltimore all right and when you call somebody a racks That's when the worst thing you could call them because when they go to prison that means it's inch I'm just saying And so the President called your rat wit better than that we really are and I'm hoping that all of us can get back to this democracy that we want and we should be passing on our children so that they can do better than what we did and so you wonder whether people believe I don't know I don't know whether they believe you but the fact is that you come you have your head down and this is gonna be one of the hardest things that you could do let me tell you the picture that really really pay me you were leaving the prison you were leaving the courthouse and I guess if your daughter had a bracelet or something on man that's thing man that's thing hurt me And the father of two daughters in her me and I can imagine how it must feel for you but I'm just saying to you I wanna first of all thank you I know that this is been art I know that you face a lot I know that you are worried about your family But this is a part of your destiny and hopefully this portion of your destiny will lead to a better a better a better Michael cohen Better donald trump a better United States of America and a better world and I mean that from the depths of my heart when we're dancing with the Angels the question will be asked in two thousand and 19 what do we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing That we pray amen and I'm tired of the statements a become people come in here and say oh this is the first hearing it is not the first hearing the first year was really what we regard to prescription drugs remember a little grill uh a lady said that miss worsening her daughter died because she could not get 300 and 33 dollars a month and his son that was our first hearing Second hearing hr one voting rights corruption and government come on now we can do more than one thing and we have got to get back to normal with that this meeting is adjourned What's going on up on Capitol Hill Michael cohen the president's longtime personal attorney and fixer wrapping up a marathon day he was up on Capitol Hill yesterday behind closed doors first meeting with the Senate Intel Committee for several hours answering their questions today before the House oversight Committee he's gonna be back up on Capitol Hill tomorrow for another hearing with the House intelligence Committee that meeting behind closed doors if you just joining us you are watching abc news I'm John Sam the in Washington alongside my colleague katherine folders we have been watching this with the team throughout the day today really the first uh one of the Dramatic set of hearings that we're gonna expect over the course of this new Congress Michael cohen who pled guilty at the end of this year speaking out for the first time publicly about his time working for President trump he is a longtime member of the trump Organization over a decade of experience working there um and it would he said is that over the course of this investigation since he first came under uh the probe of a prosecutor's up in the southern district of New York he had a change of heart he suddenly felt that he had Wrong he had hot light uh multiple times one member of Congress trying to count with him all the lies and threats he claims he had a new method for donald trump over the years at some point reaching over 500 uh catherine let's just talk about this because I mean it was a dramatic day up on Capitol Hill there were so many things we've learned from today um I could think of about 20 we're giving you that's a good question there's so much to dive into here whether it's the what he said about donald trump whether it's the probe in the southern district but we were talking a little bit about uh this before one thing that stood out to me which may fly a little bit It came towards the end of the hearing when there were he calling with questions about trump's tax returns now you and I both know that multiple times the President has said he hasn't released his tax returns because he is under audit well come and give a little bit of an interesting answer there he said that the President didn't want to release them because he didn't want to be under audit so of course that raised questions as to whether his tax returns are still under audit so I think that that's something to watch along with all the other headlines we're talking about from that there were so many things we learned but I just want to play a couple of quick bites um for those who may have missed it from the start of this morning's hearing uh cohen was talking a lot about donald trump's carrier The word from quite some time and he specifically talked about uh some contacts the President had with some of his advisers throughout the course of the campaign let's take a listen to that I am ashamed because I know what Mr trump is he is a racist he is a con man and he is a cheat he was a presidential candidate who knew that Roger stone was talking with julian a son ge about a wiki leaks drop on Democratic National Committee emails My coming today I have caused my family to be the target of personal scurrilous attacks by the President and his lawyer trying to intimidate me from appearing before this panel Mr trump called me a rat for choosing to tell the truth much like a mobster would do when one of his men decides to cooperate with the government and I do want to go back here catherine to the start of that Exchange resources a good little montage are tina put together um obviously a lot of words used says he's a racist comment and cheat but the thing we were talking about as we're watching it with our team for most of the day when he talks about Roger stone and the contacts with julian assange and Roger stone as we know has now been charged by special counsel Robert mueller just made appearance last week now under a gag order by the judge in this case but he During his testimony today that Roger stone had a call with julian assigned relayed that information to donald trump right before wiki leaks released all of the 30000 emails exactly and that's been a Central question to this investigation for a couple of years now did President trump had advance knowledge of these e mails when did he know what were the communications between Roger stone with the leaks and then back to the President um this in his testimony cohen revealed uh when he was in his office He was with the President when Roger stone called and said that he had spoken to julian a songs about emails now what he did when he said in his testimony today was that he wasn't clear exactly um the contents of those particularly males but the bottom line is that they were discuss now Roger stone of course has denied that today yeah and we also know that President trump is part of the questions that he's an sl answer from special counsel Robert mueller he was asked about what Roger stone asked about wheelies cutting has we don't know exactly what the President may or may not have said in those written responses but certainly something that many on the Hill are gonna be asking about another Exchange that we were Our attention earlier is cohen saying that he had made some mistakes over the course of his years working for donald trump take a listen to that I am sorry for my lies and for lying to Congress and to our nation I am sorry for actively working to hide from you the truth about Mr trump when you need it most And of course when we think about what he's talking about lying to Congress catherine uh one of the charges the charges that he received from prosecutors in New York was lying to Congress he was lying under oath when he appeared before that Committee and House oversight Committee he met with in public today when he met with them behind closed doors he claimed in his opening statement that he had his statement adjusted with the blessing of the trump legal team that they actually went and amend that and later in questioning he talked about uh jay second low the president's lead attorney and others like abby low uh as part of that joint defense Agreement that these attorneys all have together basically changing things up that we had not heard before he had not heard that before and what's interesting in particular about that is that cohen said that changes were made it is testimony when he lied before Congress as a related to that trump tower Moscow deal and you and I have been looking into that cohen is talking right now that she said quick listen to him And I think you will then have to rely All right there Michael cohen goes quick little statement uh just thank you for being there today and thanking the chairman and elijah cummings who really as we were just saying at the start of this catherine um really passionate from elijah cummings at the end there saying what I knows what it's like uh to you know it is Council people going to prison before and knows the being labeled as a rat is not me it's gonna help him going to jail it's obviously a phrase donald trump has used against Michael cohen a rough day for him but we were just discussing a report we heard a little bit there from Michael um about this issue with the legal team yeah and what's interesting here as it relates to the timeline of the trump tower Moscow deal you and I I've been looking into this and in the the trump legal team has changed their explanation on this rudy Giuliani um has you know provided conflicting statements as to when President trump um knew about this or was still negotiating the steel and timelines timeline exactly exactly up until the campaign up until November and then he walked it back a little bit so given those statements those conflicting timeline statements it was interesting to hear cohen say that actually these lawyers were involved in in changing statement yet and I think just one more We just wanted to discuss before we leave you it's been a long day uh the newsroom smells like some combination of subway pizza it's going into delicious around here but one of the things that caught our eye that cohen said is that he is in constant contact with prosecutors in the southern district of New York now he's obviously going to jail in two months he was supposed to report uh the beginning of March that's now been delayed uh to may um but to be in constant contact because they're still looking at other things I mean as as Chris christie our contributor has said to us multiple times you know Bob muller was obviously a big concern but he would be more About the southern district of New York and Michael cohen is giving them a road map we don't know where that could lead the yeah and there are a lot of things that that he wouldn't talk about because they were still under investigation but the southern district issue was was new here this means that they're still talking as he said they're probe John is expanding that what cohen said was that they are looking into investigating other illegal acts by President trump so we right once the mueller investigation is over ships to the southern district which poses a bigger problem we're gonna be watching this Full recap coming your way on abc's world news tonight with David muir and our team is gonna be back here late tonight 20 473 65 is always um but the President he is over and only he is been uh having his second summit with the North Korean dictator Kim jong loon uh and our team devin
